Millennials Reject Beer Because It Makes Them Fat

Well here’s a surprise, that’s really no surprise at all. A new poll has found that millennials are moving away from beer because it’s making them fat.

Here’s the deal….

Beer sales have slipped in the US in recent years, with sales by volume dropping by 1% in the US from 2017 to 2018, according to Euromonitor.

Less popular with millennials

And now a new poll conducted by Bank of America Merrill Lynch has confirmed what many of us might have already thought…That the increasingly health conscience generation is ditching the carb-heavy beers for a less caloric buzz, a different buzz (read pot) or no buzz at all.

But as reported by the Business Insider, the #1 reason that millennials abandoning beer for other options is concerns about getting fat…

Look around at a beer festival.  Are the majority people attending slim or heavier?

You think the success of Michelob Ultra is that it’s more delicious than Heady Topper? Please….

What about this whole hard seltzer trend? You thinks that’s an accident? Think again

According to the Bank of America Merrill Lynch, almost a third of millennials polled reported that they’re cutting back on alcohol in in general. That’s up from the 21% who said they were drinking less alcohol in 2018.

And 27% of those “moving away from alcohol” said they are drinking less beer because beer “makes me fat.”

Here’s more sobering stats from the BAML survey of 1,000 millennials in the US and UK…

  • 37% of the millennials who said that they are drinking less beer said they were ditching the drink because of brews’ calorie counts
  • 29% mentioned other reasons for ditching beer, including “health concerns,” breastfeeding a child, and “stopped binge drinking”
  • 19% explained the change by saying they preferred other types of alcohol
  • 5% said beer is no longer trendy

It’s apparently dawned on many millennials that as they get older they can no longer power-pound beer like they once did in college and still be able to participate in The Bachelorette…

It’s enough to drive a generation to drink… But when they do…millennials are drinking less beer.
