A ‘healthy beer’ was once, by definition, almost an oxymoron….but no longer.

There are now new beers entering the marketplace specifically crafted for active lifestyles and serious athletes who are committed to performance yet unwilling to abandon beer…

And here’s three beers (and breweries) that we like…

ZēLUS Race Pace (ZēLUS Beer Company)

Founded in January 2015, the ZēLUS Beer was created by a group of craft beer lovers who among them have run in dozens of marathons and half marathons, as well as competed in triathlons, half ironmans, and more.

With past and present careers in product development, biochemistry and cell biology this unique consortium of athletes/beer lovers banded together to brew low-alcohol beers with an emphasis on hydration…Beers that are much higher in potassium, sodium, and calcium (that right electrolytes!), than traditional brews.

With an eye to eventually expand its reach, ZēLUS Beer is according to the Boston Globe now contract brewing its beers in Massachusetts and a favorite of ours is also the lowest in alcohol…

ZēLUS Race Pace is described as a New England Mild Ale. The most sessionable of all their beers Race Pace is a 3.7% ABV hybrid that’s been abundantly dry-hopped.

Sufferfest Repeat (Sufferfest Beer Company)

If ever there was a sign that ‘functional beer’ brewed for serious athletes and active lifestyles had truly arrived, it was Sierra Nevada’s recent announcement that it would be acquiring 100 percent of Sufferfest Beer, the company’s first-ever acquisition.

Launched in 2016 by Caitlin Landesberg, an athlete herself, to address the growing contingency active and health-conscious beer lovers, Sufferfest offer a full-spectrum of craft beers, all of them containing naturally occurring vitamins and micronutrients like potassium-rich barley, sodium, iron, and fiber.

And if that wasn’t healthy enough…all of Sufferfest beers probiotic-friendly beers and go through an extensive gluten removal process that registers the lowest detection limit possible.

We like Sufferfest Repeat, a 3.5% ABV Kölsch-style beer brewed with bee pollen (a vitamin-enhancing superfood) and only 95 calories and 5 carbs per serving.

Marathon Beer Company, a new Boston Beer project, is also introducing beers for athletic and active lifestyles… and its first will be coming out on March 4th.

Crafted by Shelly Smith, a brewer, marathon runner and triathlete along with the Boston Beer team, Marathon 26.2 Brew is a crisp 4% ABV hazy Golden Ale that was brewed with Himalayan sea salt to aid with hydration, and only has 120 calories and 9 carbs per serving.
