The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – June 11, 2014

Hey it’s Wednesday and that means it’s Rumor Mill Time….Who knew that a small brewery based in Lafayette, Colorado could incite the Hindu world? We’ll be bringing you everything we know on this international incident. Plus, we’ve a roundup of the latest craft news and gossip and an all-important update on what we’re drinking this week.

We don’t sleep so you can….THIS WEEK’S RUMOR MILL IS ON!

, The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – June 11, 2014Odd13 Brewing Bows to Hindu Pressure (Lafayette, CO) – It’s getting tougher and tougher for new breweries to name themselves and/or their beers without getting into trouble with someone somewhere. Odd13 Brewing recently stirred things up some by naming one of their IPAs after the Hindu God Hanuman. Enter Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, who spearheaded a protest claiming that identifying a beer with Lord Hanuman was “highly inappropriate.” The beer’s name (which originally came from a Facebook contest) was withdrawn within hours of the first Hindu protest.

, The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – June 11, 2014Hand Crafted Gets More Worldly (NYC) – In response to a growing number of requests from their fans, Hand Crafted Tasting (who are putting on the upcoming NYC Craft Beer Festival – Summer International that’s taking place in Manhattan at the Lexington Ave Armory on June 20th & 21st) have expanded the number of international beer offerings at this summer’s festival. You asked – so they delivered!

Lagunitas Chi-Town Taproom to Open Soon (Chicago, IL) -As we’ve been reporting, the Lagunitas Brewing Company has been building a brewery in Chicago and its taproom will finally open its doors to the public on June 18. According to TimeOut, the brewery’s taproom is situated in the rafters above the 300,000-square-foot facility and “offers a 360-degree view of the brewery’s floor where kegs are filled and bottles are capped.” Lagunitas owner Tony Mage recently tweeted that the brewery will soon be at 70% capacity.

What We’re Drinking This Week (Washington, DC) – We’d like to thank all of the American craft breweries who have shared their wares with us in the past and those of you who have shipped us beer from time to time. It’s great to be able to sample the brews that we write about and it helps us have a better feel for what’s happening out there. Dallas-based Lakewood Brewing recently shipped us some of their best and that’s what we’re drinking this week. So far, we’ve hit their wonderful summer seasonal (and ACB fav) Zomer Pils and it was the perfect antidote for the heat and humidity that consumes DC in the summer.

, The American Craft Beer Rumor Mill – June 11, 2014Ready and Able (Merrimack, NH) – The Able Ebenezer Brewing Company was founded in the spring of 2013 by three former US Army officers with a love of craft beer. And they are having a grand opening of their brewery and their tasting room this Saturday, June 14th at noon. There will be a “bottle breaking” at 1 pm, followed by food, beer sampling, raffle prizes, music, and more – so if you’re up in the Granite state this weekend – you should drop by.
