InBev, AB InBev Commits To Solar Power In China

We can get snarky about Big Beer here at American Craft Beer. So it’s only fair that we applaud global entities like AB InBev for earth-friendly initiatives like their commitment to solar power in China.

Here’s the deal…

The world’s largest brewer, AB InBev, is reported to be converting half of its plants in China into solar-powered factories to reduce its fossil fuel footprint in the world’s #1 beer market.

The company, home to mega-brands like Budweiser, Corona and Stella Artois currently operates 40 breweries across China and they hope that more than half of them will be running on solar power by the end of 2020.

InBev, AB InBev Commits To Solar Power In ChinaAB InBev’s initiative was announced earlier this month at its state-of-the-art low-carbon brewery in China’s southern Fujian province…a US$15.8 million solar power investment that is expected to generate 15 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually and provide 8 percent of the Putian brewery’s power usage in 2019.

Jean Jereissati, president of its North Asia Pacific region, told China Daily that AB InBev’s goal is to have completely converted to renewable energy sources by 2025. And as anyone who’s travelled in that country knows the air quality can get nasty, so this is both an ambitious and a worthy goal.

“Climate change has profound implications for us and for the communities where we live and work,” Jereissati, said. “Cutting back on fossil fuels is positive for both environment and business.”

The company announced its 2025 Sustainability Goals earlier this year, seeking long-term sustainable growth in areas including smart agriculture, water stewardship, circular packaging and climate action.

Boosted by its green strategies and diversified sales channels, Anheuser-Busch InBev saw its revenue rise 5.1 percent to $56.44 billion in its 2017. And driven by summer’s arrival World Cup fever the company saw its global sales almost 100% in May.
