Brewgooder is a UK-based charity beer brand that’s doing good things in developing countries like Malawi,
In 2015, Brewgooder embarked on a simple mission, “to provide clean water for 1,000,000 people through the power of craft beer by donating 100% of its profits to clean water charities.
And now Brewgooder has teamed up with Brooklyn Brewery to launch a new UK beer made with a ‘super grain’, fonio, an African grain which most closely resembles a cross between couscous and quinoa that has proven to be an alternative to the wheat shortages resulting from the war in Ukraine.
Wheat prices across Africa – which previously sourced 44% of its wheat from Ukraine, have risen by about 50%, according to iNews and, brewers in Senegal have turned to fonio as an alternative.
And now Brewgooder and Brooklyn Brewery are debuting a new beer, a transatlantic project that was a year in the making…
“We had been speaking about the possibility of the beer with Garrett Oliver and the Brooklyn team since summer 2019 before the discussion was waylaid for a few years by the pandemic,” Alan Mahon, Brewgooder co-founder told the Drinks Business. “Finally getting it launched after a year of hard work feels great.”
“The project has been born of a desire to develop an empowering supply chain by working with small holder farmers,” Mahon explained to DB. “Fonio is certainly a more people-positive alternative over the long term”.
Fonio IPA is a 4.3% ABV India Pale Ake with a light finish. Brewgooder and Brooklyn Brewery stressed that beers brewed with the “super-grain” have the potential to make brewery supply chains more inclusive and less carbon-intensive.
And with that in mind they hope to develop a supply chain enabling more regular use of the grain within the UK brewing industry.
