Thanks to the almost worldwide closure of bars and restaurants due to the coronavirus pandemic, draft beer sales have come to a virtual standstill forcing brewers around the globe to start dumping their beer.
A flood of beer has already been destroyed in the US as well as in the UK. And now French brewers have begun pouring what could be as much as 10 million liters of beer down the drain.
The French trade beer association Brasseurs de France, which represents around 98% of the country’s brewing sector, has said that the loss could be devestating to the country’s small brewers..
On May 5 Brasseurs de France warned that the “brutal closure of cafes, restaurants, the cessation of tourist activities and the cancellation of all festivals and fairs has left more than 10 million liters of beer, mostly in barrels, languishing, adding smaller brewers and those who specialize in craft beers and real ales have the most to lose.
“These are very hoppy beers,” the trade organization explained “and if we keep them for too long – after two or three months’ storage – the nose and the taste, the flavor disappears.”
France has cautiously begun to lift its lockdown, after two months of restrictions. But that doesn’t mean things will return to normal anytime soon.
Shops have reopened, gatherings of up to 10 people are now permitted, but as the Drinks Business reports “cafés and restaurants will not be able to open until June.”
According to a Brasseurs de France survey, 70% of French breweries have lost around 50% of their revenue since March 15, when bars and restaurants were mandated to close.
And the massive beer dumping in France, the US and UK will, like the coronavirus, continue its global spread.
