American Craft Beer delivers craft beer news and lifestyle 24/7 and because we do, we’re sometimes sent books to review. And we recently received a book that we love.
Beer Hiking Virginia, North Carolina, and DC
Written by English Knowles and Jim Knowles, siblings, both passionate hikers and craft beer enthusiasts who grew up in the shadow of the Blue Ridge, Mountains Beer Hiking Virginia, North Carolina & DC is the definitive guide to 40 of the best hikes and craft breweries on the East Coast.
We liked this book a lot, and what’s not to like?
Each carefully selected hike leads you through a stunning natural landscape and ends near a brewery or a brewpub where you can finish your journey with a fresh craft beer.
This full-color guidebook features the best one- to six-hour beer hikes around the mountains, lakes, battlefields, rails-to-trails, and coasts of Virginia and North Carolina.
“Beer Hiking” takes you from the top of North Carolina’s Grandfather Mountain to the swamps of Cape Fear, and from Virginia’s Eastern Shore to the rolling pastures of Shenandoah Valley.
Each trail description includes details on access, difficulty, duration, points of interest, and, at trail’s end, a recommended beer, with notes on its appearance, aroma, and taste. You’ll also get a little insight into the creative and passionate people behind the brewing process.
And the co-authors behind this wonderful guide to scenic byways and artisan beers are part or what makes “Beer Hiking Virginia, North Carolina, and DC” so appealing…
English Knowles fell in love with outdoor trails as a runner in high school, a passion that eventually led to multi-day adventures in the High Sierras, the Appalachians and the Alps.
She got interested in craft beer while working in the fermentation business in California, and now spends her time bi-coastally between the Shenandoah Valley and Sonoma County.
Jim Knowles came to beer and hiking while living in the Scottish Highlands in the 1990s. He polished his passion for beer over Czech Pilsners while teaching in Prague and is currently teaches literature at North Carolina State University in Raleigh.
In a world of beer books that tend to be one and done kind of reads, “Beer Hiking Virginia, North Carolina, and DC” is a keeper that you’ll want to tap into regularly, especially if you enjoy the great outdoors and serious beer as much as we do!
