Molson Coors to Distribute Duvel Moortgat’s European Beers in Canada

Molson Coors Beverage Company has announced a new deal to import and distribute Brouwerij Duvel Moortgat’s collection of European beers in Canada.

The multi-year deal, which is effective immediately according to Beer & Beyond, gives Six Pints Specialty Beer Company, Molson Coors’ Canadian craft beer arm, rights to import beers brewed by six Duvel-owned European brands across Canada.

Included in the pact, which excludes the Quebec Province, are Duvel, whose flagship Belgian Blonde will be the priority of the partnership, Brasserie D’Achouffe, Liefmans, De Koninck, Maredsous and Vedett. Based in Puurs, Belgium, Duvel was founded in 1871 and is now sold in 65 countries.

In 2003 Duvel Moortgat completed its acquisition of Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown, NY. And in 2014, it purchased two other significant US craft brewing players, Kansas City’s Boulevard Brewing and Firestone Walker Brewing in Paso Robles, California.

Unionization Effort at Surly Brewing Fails by a Single Vote

It was close but no cigar as an attempt to unionize by Surly Brewing employees fell short by just one vote.

On September 1, employees at the Minneapolis, Minnesota based brewery announced their intent to unionize under Unite Here Local 17.

On September 2 Surly Brewing announced that it would be “indefinitely” closing the beer hall that adjoins its Minneapolis production facility in November, an action that will lead to the “permanent layoff” of 100+ employees, many who had recently joined an effort to unionize…

On September 25, the Star Tribune reported that Surly had “reached an agreement with some of its hospitality and kitchen staff to hold a vote on whether the group will form a union.” And on October 7 Unite Here Local 17 took to twitter to announce that its union effort had failed, again by a single vote.
