There's absolutely nothing like the wrath of a lover scorned as exemplified by a Bloomfield Hills, Michigan man who bought a home next to his ex-wife and erected a giant statue of a hand giving "the middle finger." This gesture, which dates back to Ancient Greece (and represents the phallus), has long been seen as the ultimate sign of contempt and disrespect - but we don't think we've ever seen it used on this kind of scale.

We blame the industry for this... It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates - things were pretty much done. But clearly all that's changed. So here's some of what's happened in the world of craft beer while you were enjoying yourselves.

Two Belgian professors who teach at the Catholic University of Leuven recently conducted a test that gave us pause. What they decided to do was to submit the Antwerp library's 10 most borrowed books to bacteriology and toxicology tests.

And we've got to admit the results they got back were concerning...

We just received an update from our friends at the AHA with the current demographics of America's homebrewers, and like a lot of what we receive from this organization, it was way more interesting than even we could have imagined. Did you realize that more than one million homebrewers are currently brewing two million barrels of beer yearly? We definitely didn't and there's a lot more here that blew our mind!

American Craft Beer covers the craft beer movement, its news, and its lifestyle. We view the craft beer scene as an entertainment industry that is now very much a part of today's pop cultural landscape. And it's probably because of our unique approach to the industry that we're constantly receiving offers from different media groups asking us to share with our readers everything from new restaurants, cuisine, hangover cures, and beer-related products to new music, movies, and books....which leads us to Good Books - a brand new series dedicated not only to new and noteworthy books on craft beer, but also to anything else that we're currently reading, enjoying, and recommending.

Triplehorn Brewing Co. has been pouring pints of their eclectic roster of brews for just over a year, but they already have a decidedly committed and enthusiastic following. Despite the brewery's less-than-conspicuous location tucked into the back corner of a ho-hum Woodinville industrial park, the "Triplehorde" has been regularly finding their way to enjoy brothers Ray and Rich Neishem's tasty beers in a curiously convivial setting. Imagine Viking-inspired quirkiness in a cozily appointed living room that happens to also be a neighborhood VFW Hall. And then add heavenly beer seemingly delivered via the Bifrost by Odin himself.

Sometimes, Mother Nature flips you the bird, and it's a good thing.

Located in a historic hanger of the closed Alameda Naval Air Base, the walk up to the much anticipated Faction Brewing offers little scenery beyond deserted military buildings, a dusty dog run, and some barbed wire fencing. But walk into the 1,200-square-foot space that's destined to be Faction's taproom and beer garden, and it's a whole different world.

Put another one up on the board as the Denver metro adds to its rapidly expanding craft beer scene. The newest addition, Grist Brewing Company hosted its grand opening Saturday, November 2nd. Grist is the first craft brewery to open in the Highlands Ranch area of Denver and aims to capitalize on its south location. Highlands Ranch is a burgeoning suburban community, which has grown by leaps and bounds in the past 2 years as Denver continues to grow.

It may be just me, but I honestly believe that Halloween is the best holiday. Seriously, I love it so much that my wife and I celebrate our anniversary on that day. Again, totally serious.

As we got close to the end of October, it became obvious to me that we needed to have a discussion about the real things that go bump in the night. The call went out to the team: "What should we be drinking this All Hallow's Eve?" The answers were terrifying.

  • March 9th, 2022

Halloween has come to be my favorite holiday of the year. I adore old crappy horror movies, not because I want to scream like a 12-year-old girl and get dabbles of urine in my shorts like some people, but because I think they're hilarious. After recently watching The Monster Squad (which is a shittier version of The Goonies but with monsters), I began to think that some monsters have it rough. I'm sure if I had to sleep in a wooden coffin during the day, I would want to bite some necks too (I needs me my Tempur-Pedic mattress pad!). I wondered if there is one thing that would make these monsters' lives a little better, and of course, craft beer was my answer.

Things can get a little scary at the ACB compound on occasion - but nothing like this, that's for sure. Our friends at the Saint Arnold Brewing Company just sent us an urgent and concerning press release. With Halloween just around the corner, we thought it important that you were warned!

  • July 25th, 2016

The Washington, D.C. area has garnered a less-than-stellar reputation recently. Whether it's the dismal approval rating of Congress and the recent government shutdown debacle, or the failings of storied sports franchises that can't succeed when it matters most, to outsiders the D.C. area may appear to be a place that can't get its act together. So it may be surprising then that a burgeoning craft beer scene has been thriving throughout the region, with the Port City Brewing Company coming out as one of its leaders.

  • May 4th, 2025

Hey, even though we act like it, we admit we don't know everything. And one thing that's cool to know more about is the kind of beer that you're drinking. Every beer style has a back-story, a hometown, and a reason why it came about. It all plays a role in a beer's DNA and we think that matters.

So welcome to the latest in our ongoing series (drum roll please...) "What the Hell Is a Märzen?"

Images of the Portland area are often associated with lush forests, majestic snow-capped peaks, and more recently, as an idyllic world, like the one seen in 'Portlandia.' And for more than 150 years, this is just what the natives have wanted you to believe. In reality, the scenic beauty of the town has been over promoted to hide the seedy and eerie underbelly of a land first inhabited by cannibal settlers, no good scallywag mariners, and more. All of the above conditions created the ideal incubator for the 'Shanghai' of decent citizens, many houses of ill repute, and some tasty-ass brews. This is where George Frederick Bottler and his tomb come in...

Last Saturday, ACB attended Snallygaster 2013 in Washington, DC, and in spite of its huge crowds, the event was a blast and ran smoothly. An attentive and involved staff oversaw everything. They were always on hand to answer questions, direct the festive masses towards their favorite beers, and make sure that nothing got out of hand. As we wrote earlier this week, Snallygaster was a craft beer experience done right....Unfortunately, that's not always the case.
