ACB is a consortium of writers, artists, industry professionals, and dangerous hopheads that cover the craft beer scene for us and for you. Many of them are based in different cities and they all bring wildly differing perspectives as to what's important in the world of craft beer. So when we asked some of them to look back at 2013 and give us their highlights and lowlights - we got so much back from them that we were forced to make this a series.
So check out Part 1 (if you haven't already), and welcome to More Good, Bad, and Ugly.

ACB is a consortium of writers, artists, industry professionals, and dangerous hopheads that cover the craft beer scene for us and for you. Many of them are based in different cities and they all come with differing interests and perspectives as to what's important in the world of craft beer. So we asked them to look back at 2013 - and give us some of their highlights and lowlights - and got so much back from them that we were forced to break things up into three separate articles that we'll be running throughout this week.
So fasten your seat belt and welcome to the first in what's fast becoming a series - Craft beer in 2013 - The Good, the Bad, and the UglyI'll admit that I probably put a little too much confidence in the magic that is Peyton Manning and his band of Broncos. In my mind, the Super Bowl was just a formality and we were already the champs. Then things took an immediate harsh turn and my optimism slowly gave way to crushing disappointment throughout the remainder of the game. But my distress was short-lived, as I quickly realized that there are still many reasons to love and celebrate the Broncos. With a Colorado craft beer in hand for inspiration, I was easily able to come up with a few reasons to look forward to next season with the same all-encompassing excitement as always.
Aeronaut Brewing Company is not what it seems. Tucked away by Somerville's Union Square alongside Brooklyn Boulders and Artisan's Asylum, the former Ames Safety Envelope building is as yet unmarked (a sign on the door reads "AirCraft Aerial Arts"). Once inside, co-founder Ben Holmes appears sporting a camo-colored knit beanie and a bright blue woot! hoodie, looking much less like an MIT grad student and more like he should be out playing hacky-sack on a grassy quad. Despite his relaxed demeanor, it's clear he has a solid vision for the internally funded space, down to the name: "It reminded us of a time when technology was hopeful and fun."
We blame the industry for this... It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates -things were pretty much done. But clearly all that's changed.
So here's some of what's happened in the world of craft beer while you were off enjoying yourselves.
Every February, Bay Area drinkers raise their pint glasses during SF Beer Week in a 10-day-long boozy toast to everything that's great about San Francisco's craft beer scene - well, almost everything.

Two teams enter, one team goes to Disneyland. That's what happens this week: the National Football League's finale, known to most as "The day Doritos releases new commercials," but known to others as The Super Bowl.
Florida doesn't usually get its fair share of good news. It seems like we're constantly embroiled in some sort of divisive and sensational news story that's the very lifeblood of the Nancy Graces of the world. But in 2013, Florida's craft beer industry absolutely flourished. More new breweries opened and/or expanded than you can shake a mash paddle at, and some of this country's most coveted brews finally made it south of the Florida-Georgia border.

Craft beer fans watching the Super Bowl can't help but notice all those mega-budget Big Beer commercials that run throughout the game. And if you're like us (not that that's a good thing), you might have found yourself reflecting on them as well as on what it would be like to see a real craft beer commercial during the Super Bowl ...and on whether we should even want to.
Hey it's Wednesday and that means it's Rumor Mill Time....With the Super Bowl soon upon us, the craft beer community was rocked by word of a high-stakes NFL wager between two big-time breweries! We, the Average Joes at ACB, may not have full-time jobs brewing, selling, or judging beer, yet if you knew just how AWESOME some of our real jobs are, you'd better understand why we spend so much of our free time drinking beer. It all goes to show that we take our research quite seriously and wish to impart the wisdom we've stumbled upon, in the hopes of making your free time as rich as ours.
Without further ado, let's drink in yet another chapter in our series, "What the Hell is a Barleywine?"

Places that are warmer than Wisconsin these days include Mars and Mt. Everest, yet I still wasn't surprised when the Isthmus Beer and Cheese Fest sold out yet again last Saturday despite the frigid temperatures. For the fifth year in a row, the culmination of Wisconsin culture drew people out of their toasty homes and into the arms of warming ales and succulent cheeses. In a marathon event, I drew out the highlights from an extensive range of brand-new brews to long-beloved ones.

Good things are happening in Big Sky Country where craft beer has finally arrived. But this really shouldn't surprise any of you who know the state and its people. Montana has long been known for its wide open spaces and its independent spirit. You've got to think that they'd be all about the craft beer ethos - small independent brewers making beer for themselves and their communities - and now they are.
We've not sampled beer made with bacon and donuts - it's not our thing - but we figure there's probably someone out there who might like it. We feel much the same about a beer that was brewed with moon dust. But even though beers brewed with lunar dust, or donuts for that matter, might strike you as gimmicky and questionable, they're not morally reprehensible.
So welcome to the latest in our ongoing series BAD IDEAS IN BREWING, and we're blaming Iceland for this one...
It's not often that the smell of mesquite-smoked turkey and fresh bread greet me when I go to work every morning. Last Thursday, the enticing aroma of home-cooked goodness was not the product of a pleasant dream, but part of the hunger-inducing experience of spending the entire day shadowing one of Dallas, Texas's finest new executive chefs, Daniel Pittman at LUCK (Local Urban Craft Kitchen).

This is the greatest weekend that's ever happened in the NFL. That may be a bit of hyperbole, but let's get this straight: it is the best weekend this season will see. Two of the best rivalries ignite in the games that decide who will play for all of the marbles: the two future hall-of-fame QBs, both with rings, both with stats, both with something to prove against each other; two young QBs, playing for division rivals that would want nothing than to watch the other burn. This is the NFL Conference Championships.
