So welcome to our awesome Weekend Picks…

, The American Craft Beer Weekend Picks – January 17, 2014North to Alaska! (Anchorage, AL) – We cover this event every year because it’s just that good! The 19th annual Great Alaska Beer & Barleywine Festival is returning to the Egan Convention Center in Anchorage this weekend (Jan 17th -18th) – and you need to be there. There will be three tasting sessions this year (including a special connoisseur session on Saturday afternoon), each with more than 200 massive barleywines, much-needed winter warmers, and limited edition cold-weather seasonals. For more info on this Northern classic, be sure to check out: Beer & Barleywine Fest

, The American Craft Beer Weekend Picks – January 17, 2014On The Big Screen – January releases always feel smaller in the wake of all the BIG movies that open over the holidays – but this weekend has a couple films opening that might be decent. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is the latest reboot of Tom Clancy’s CIA series, and in spite of its lousy name, it might actually be fun. It’s directed by actor Kenneth Branagh (who also plays the film’s Russian villain) and stars Chris Pine as the series newest Jack Ryan. Kevin Costner makes an appearance as Ryan’s boss and Keira Knightly stars as eye candy. On the cheesier side of things is the latest found footage scare-fest, Devil’s Due. And if it is half as scary as the “animatronic devil baby” that the film’s producers paraded around NYC – scaring the shit out of unsuspecting New Yorkers and hyping the movie brilliantly while they did – we are in!

Anniversary Time – One of our favorite North Texas breweries is turning one this Saturday, and you’re invited! Join Community Beer Company this Saturday, January 18, for a very special event and the chance to try one of 15 beers they’ll have available, including the official release of their bourbon barrel-aged Glenstemmons Scotch Ale. They’ll also have live music from TX’s unofficial craft beer band, Shotgun Friday, local artists displaying works for sale, and food trucks on-site. Don’t miss it – tickets are still available at the door!

, The American Craft Beer Weekend Picks – January 17, 2014TV Time – The HBO network introduced a new “noir” series last Sunday and if its debut was any indication, it might soon become 2014’s finest new drama. True Detective is about a murder mystery, told back and forth in time, which takes place in the backwater towns of Louisiana over a seven-year period. The story is told through the eyes of Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, who star as detectives and unlikely partners forced to work together to solve a disturbing ritual-slaying that haunts them both (literally and metaphorically) for years.

Our Awesome Weekend Beer Pick

Our friends at Ninkasi Brewing have just released the latest in their Single Hop Series and we can’t wait to get our hands on some! Ninkasi Mosaic is their latest in the series, which features a refined and consistent malt profile up against a rotating single-hop (in this case, the Mosaic hop). Not only will you be able to find their Single Hop Series beer on draft this year, but it will also be available for the first time ever in 22 oz. bottles found in the brewery’s variety 4-packs.
