One of the things that we enjoy about SAVOR, in addition to the beers themselves and the wonderful foods offered to pair with them, are the unique Salon opportunities occurring nightly. These carefully curated Salons allow attendees a quiet respite from the Grand Tasting in the National Building Museum's Great Hall and a private space where they can learn more about brewing techniques and sample "special reserve" beers with some of the industry's masters. So here are just some of the Salons being presented on Friday Night that caught our attention...

The last time that we spoke with Josh, he was just releasing his first book, Brewed Awakening. It was a beautifully designed, witty, and wonderfully written book. We were all about it. But for some reason (read: drunkenness), our 5 Stupid Questions with him ended badly, and he left our offices promising that he was done "dealing with idiots" and threatening to fire his publicist. Who knew writers even had publicists?

What brings us all together are our words, our associations, our tastes, and how we choose to gather. For centuries, we gathered around a fire, around religion, in a town square, or at the local brew house. Somewhere things got lost in the shuffle as we evolved beyond the family unit, the congregation, the dance hall, or even those sweet local suds.

You might get the impression that we, the beer gurus of ACB, understand all there is to know about beer--yet we're still learning, just like you. It's this thirst for knowledge that drives us to dig deeper into the stories behind the beer we drink, thus protecting you from the embarrassment of not knowing what exactly it is you've decided to pour in your mouth.

Of those, 20 were given to breweries from the Chicagoland area (within three hours driving distance from Chicago), further solidifying this region as not only one of the fastest growing, but also as a hotbed for some of the world's best beers. Okay, we get that this isn't actually a brewed product. But this idea is so massively misguided that we felt it earned its own right to be included in our Bad Ideas in Brewing Series. We recently learned via BevLog that a product called Palcohol, a new powdered booze creation, had been approved by the U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau and that its makers are hoping to get it into the marketplace this fall.

Any craft beer lover would probably admit that, at one point or another, they've dreamed of traveling the country at length to visit as many breweries as they could squeeze into their schedules. For Dallas, Texas-based craft beer enthusiasts Michael Roberts and Brandon Wurtz, that dream has become a reality since they started their yearlong, cross-country brewcation at the beginning of this year as the Brews Travelers 365.

Who would have thought that a casual discussion between two family members drinking homebrewed beer on a Maine beach could turn into a business venture? That initial discussion and many that followed between PJ Mercier and his father in-law, Bob Johnson (an avid homebrewer), would eventually lead to the establishment of Navigation Brewing Company.

Every year, there are awards handed out to deserving brewers from around the country at Denver's Great American Beer Festival. Then there are the local fests that showcase the flagship and seasonal beers that provide a more limited scope. Yet it's only every two years that the Brewer's Association gathers for the Craft Brewers Conference AND features the World Beer Cup, a competition showcasing beers from 58 countries, evaluated by an international panel of 219 judges from 31 countries and what I can only presume to be some psychedelic hangovers...Here are 5 award winners you should snatch up in the store, at the pub, or at a festival ASAP.
