5 Craft Brewery Names We Wouldn’t Have Chosen

A well-chosen brewery name is an essential marketing tool that can enhance and enrich a brewery’s whole vibe and we recently picked some of our favorite brewery names. But unfortunately not every brewery name is perfect…and here are five that we would have avoided like the plague.

Again we’re thinking marketing here …We know that many of these operations brew , 5 Craft Brewery Names We Wouldn’t Have Chosengreat beer (which as we’ve explained in the past, is always the bottom line)…but still.

Ass Clown Brewing (Cornelius, NC) – A great brewery name lends itself to imaging – to the whole look of that brand – its labels and packaging. And although the term “ass clown” is an attention-grabber (hell, every one of these names are attention-grabbers) the demented clown logo (which smartly avoids any ass) still plays like a violence porn flick. And that’s not the best place to start.

Belching Beaver Brewery (Vista, CA) – At least they didn’t go with “big beaver” (turns out someone else did) but honestly avoiding any beaver references altogether, might be a better way to go. And assuming they were locked in on “beaver” and unwilling to budge – why on earth add the unpleasant adjective, “belching” into the already provocative mix. Yes, it’s a memorable name – but for all the wrong reasons. And any logo designed around a beaver reference, is fraught with peril.

, 5 Craft Brewery Names We Wouldn’t Have ChosenCalfkiller Brewing (Sparta, TN) – Do we even have to explain?

Griesedieck Bros. (St Louis, MO) – Okay this one is hardly their fault and it’s not unusual to choose a family name for a brewery. It’s just that when you pronounce “Griesedieck” phonetically, one can sometimes mistakenly end up with “greasy dick.” And once that misguided word association is made – it just never goes away.

One Trick Pony Brewery– (Lansing, IL) – Talk about selling yourself short. Let’s just broadcast to everyone that we’re not that creative to begin with. Right there with Below Grade Brewing in setting themselves up for failure – and the exact opposite of Gigantic Brewing – a name that we love!
