We can’t believe it’s August already…So much has happened this year and it doesn’t appear that things will be slowing down any time soon. But no worries – Rumor Mill is always on the case, keeping you plugged in to all the craft beer news that matters. Plus we’ve an all-important update on what we’ve been drinking lately and you absolutely don’t want to miss that.
DC Beer Week Returns (Washington, DC) – ‘Power City” is home to many major craft beer events and one of the big ones begins this weekend, when the 7th annual DC Beer Week returns to the National Capital Region. The debut event that will be kicking off this week of beer dinners, tastings, tap takeovers, and craft beer mayhem (Aug 9th-16th) is Sunday’s Brewers on the Block. This massive celebration at Suburbia, outside Union Market, will feature the best breweries, cideries, and meaderies in the region – and promises to be a total blast!
Is Craft Beer Couponing Coming? (Texas) – Would you try a new beer if you had discount coupons that grocery stores would honor? We would for sure – and Texas is thinking about changing things up. You see, shoppers in Texas use millions of coupons a year to shave prices for a multitude of foods and other products – but that option doesn’t include alcohol. But that could change according the Star-Telegram who are reporting that “state officials are considering a proposal to draft rules for coupons offering discounts on beer and wine.”
Solar-darity! (Washington, DC) – The ecological movement and craft brewing community have long been kindred spirits and that’s why we were pleased to hear that Atlas Brew Works was teaming up with DC-based solar energy provider Solar Solution to convert its electricity supply to solar energy. “Protecting our environment is a responsibly we all share,” said Atlas CEO Justin Cox, “Converting our energy source to sustainable and renewable solar power will help offset our carbon footprint and continue our efforts to be a green brewery.” Solar Solution will install a 67.5KW solar panel system on the roof of Atlas’ facility which should provide enough electricity during peak production times to completely offset Atlas’ use of traditionally sourced electricity.
Drink And Like A Fish (Portland, OR) – Salmon-Safe is an important non-profit and they do good work, and Hopworks Urban Brewery has become the world’s first brewery site to receive this certification. Salmon-Safe is a non-profit organization that links land management practices with the protection of agricultural and urban watersheds through whole-site inspections with rigorous peer-revised standards – so there’s that.
What We’ve Been Drinking Lately (Washington, DC) – We’d like to thank all the breweries who ship us beer from time to time. It’s always great to sample the brews that we write about and helps to give us a better feel for what’s happening out there. And last night we hit up a great summer seasonal that Starr Hill is returning to the marketplace. Starr Hill Whiter Shade of Pale White IPA is a 7.5% hybrid that melds the best qualities of a Belgian Wit with the hop-forward characteristics of the American IPA.
