The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – May 11, 2015

, The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – May 11, 2015We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates – things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed.

So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were off enjoying yourselves.

AMERICAN CRAFT BEER WEEK IS ON! (Everywhere, USA) – Actually it started yesterday and if you haven’t already started celebrating, we’re pissed at you. From May 11th through May 17th, the craft beer community will be raging and you need to be in on this! This year might just be the biggest celebration ever, and there will brewery tours, special beer releases, food and beer pairings, and tap takeovers taking place everywhere.

SIGNS OF AGE? (Portsmouth, NH / Woodinville, WA) – Hey, no one said that getting older was easy and sometimes even a pioneer brand like Redhook can be overlooked. The Craft Beer Alliance, which also handles Widmer Brothers and Kona, just released their first quarter results for 2015 and Redhook’s sales showed 16% decline over the same period last year. It’s enough to make you drink – but maybe not Redhook.

MORE USELESS BEER RESEARCH FROM ENGLAND (UK) – Hey another pointless study on beer has just been released and we can’t help but wonder – who signed off on this one? Researchers at the University of Bristol’s Tobacco and Alcohol Research Group have released findings suggesting that volume markings on glasses (think baby bottle) encourage people to drink more slowly according to the Huffington Post.

CITY PLANNERS TURN TO BREWERS (Cincinnati, OH) – The role that craft breweries have played in urban revitalization over the last decade is significant. And now Cincinnati’s city planners are actively soliciting brewers input as they look to reshape the city’s historic Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, once home to beer gardens and brothels back in the 1800s. Wcpo.com is reporting that “the Over-the-Rhine Brewery District has a seat at the table and appears to be nudging the city’s next zoning code toward an impact-based approach that accommodates living, working and playing in the same city blocks.”
