Already home to more than three dozen breweries, buzzy names like, Hardywood Park Craft Brewery, Stone Brewing’s East Coast hub and The Answer, Richmond,Virginia’s craft beer scene is showing no signs of slowing down.

And here’s some recent highlights…

, Richmond Virginia’s Explosive Beer SceneTwo breweries have joined Richmond’s bustling beer scene in the Scott’s Addition (SABA), a historic district that’s already home to players like The Veil and Ardent Craft Ales. Bingo Beer Co. opened a bier hall and arcade featuring serious beer and plenty of gaming.

And Strangways Brewing which already has locations in Richmond and Fredericksburg, Virginia, opened its third outlet in SABA this year.

Virginia’s largest craft brewery, Starr Hill will also be opening a Richmond location in SABA in 2019 to complement its headquarters and main taproom in Crozet, and its ‘Pilot Brewery & Side Stage’ taproom in Roanoke.

The Starr Hill Beer Hall & Rooftop is designed to offer a multi-tiered drinking experience.  The first-floor Beer Hall will feature over 4,500 square feet for the brewery and bar with an additional 1,000-square-foot deck outside. And the all-season 3,000-square-foot Rooftop bar and beer garden will be an escape for drinkers looking for fresh air and excellent views of the Richmond skyline

Other recent newbies include Basic City Brewing, Dogtown Brewing, ShipLock Brewing and the revived Richbrau Brewing Co. In 2020 The Veil is opening a second location in Richmond and Manastoh Brewing is slated to open in the former Bank of Commerce & Trust building downtown., Richmond Virginia’s Explosive Beer Scene

But every ‘boomtown’ has its occasional ‘bust’…. and Richmond has had a few as well.

After only one year in business Richmond, Virginia-based Twisted Ales Craft Brewing announced that it was ceasing operations. 7 Hills Brewing in Richmond’s uber-trendy Shockoe Bottom neighborhood also closed in 2018.  And Charlottesville’s Champion Brewing shuttered its downtown location after a nearly three-year run in the city.
