Quick Hits: US Brewery Expands In Spite Of Pandemic / Explosive Beer Recalled

The beer biz never sleeps at American Craft Beer. And here’s just some of what’s been happening while you were drinking your way through a Super Bowl weekend.

Potentially Volatile Beer Recalled

, Quick Hits: US Brewery Expands In Spite Of Pandemic / Explosive Beer RecalledOn January 26, Eugene, OR-based Oakshire Brewing announced a voluntary recall of its Theme From The Bottom Mango Raspberry Cheesecake Smoothie Sour Ale, a beer that was sold directly from its taprooms, January 16, 2021 through January 18, 2021.

This from the brewery…

Today we became aware of an issue with our January 16th release of Theme Mango Cheesecake in 16oz cans. There are visible signs of refermentation in some of these cans causing the can to bulge and/or burst

If you have Theme Mango Cheesecake in your possession, please do not open, transport, ship it, or attempt to return it.

Carefully dispose of the product by following these steps…

  • Before disposing of any cans of Theme Mango Cheesecake, please put on protective gloves and a face shield (or goggles and a mask).
  • Place all remaining cans in a closed box and place immediately in a secured garbage container or dumpster outside.

Yikes!

Not Normal

At a time when many US craft breweries are playing things safe to better weather the economic impact of the lingering pandemic, Normal, IL-based Destihl Brewery has announced plans to expand capacity after increasing production by 25% last year.

“While our brewpub/restaurant and beer hall retail operations have been devastated by ongoing mandatory closures of indoor dining and other restrictions in our state, we are looking forward to a great 2021 at wholesale and retail,” co-founder and CEO Matt Potts said in a news release.

Destihl plans to add 10,000 barrels of fermentation capacity at the end of March, more automation for its canning line, and the addition of other equipment later this year.

According to the company Destihl’s draft beer sales fell 47% last year due to the pandemic-related closing of bars and restaurants, but its packaged beer sales grew 30%, which more than offset the loss in draft beer sales.
