November is ON and American brewers are addressing things with an intriguing roster of beers you’re gonna want to have around as things cool down.
Jack Is Back! (Paso Robles, CA) – Firestone Walker’s mythic Wookey Jack is back for a limited seasonal release. Born more than a dozen years ago, Firestone Wookey Jack is an 8.3% ABV Black Rye IPA with toasty malted rye notes and a balanced bite at the finish.
Wookey Jack came into the world at a time when Cascadian Dark Ales were starting to storm into California from the Pacific Northwest. Also known as Black IPAs, these beers brought a unique regional expression to the exploding IPA genre.
“Wookey Jack has a hardcore following and we get asked about it all the time,” said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “It’s a beer for those in the know and those who want to discover something different. Everyone loves the visual trick of Wookey Jack—it’s as black as a stout but drinks like an IPA.” It’s a beer that just seems right for fall and winter.”
The latest edition of Wookey Jack remains faithful to the original recipe, which includes loads of pearled dark malts with rye adding a rustic grain element. The hops are sticky Citra and dank, pungent Amarillo. And both of which are incorporated into a massive dry-hop regimen, adding to the lore of this three-time gold medalist at the Great American Beer Festival.
Bavarian Best (Patchogue, NY) – The leaves are turning, and Blue Point Brewing has returned a beloved fall favorite that pairs perfectly with the changing seasons. Brewed a couple of hundred years ago to celebrate the betrothal of the Crown Prince of Bavaria, Blue Point Oktoberfest is a 5.7% ABV Marzen Style Lager that couldn’t be more traditional.
Tailgating (Nashville, TN) – Tennessee’s fastest growing craft brewer, TailGate Brewery, has an award-winning year-round offering, that takes fruit infused beer in a more tempered direction. Light-bodied yet creamy, Tail Gate Orange Wheat Beer is a 5% ABV refresher that doesn’t fall victim to “fruit overkill.”
