The journey to equality has been a long and winding road for members of the LGBTQ+ community, and  queer bars have played a critical role both as safe havens and important historical settings.

And now Miller Lite has released a book celebrating the rich history of queer bars and their importance to the community,

Using its sizable platform Miller Lite (the #6 bestselling beer in US) partnered with Dr. Eric Cervini, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, bestselling author and historian of LGBTQ+ politics, to produce a guidebook called “Beers & Queer History.”

A 27-page hardcover coffee table book, “Beers and Queer History” highlights the little-known backstories of 10 iconic bars, from New York’s Stonewall Inn to the Panic Bar in Lincoln, Neb. And it’s available now on Miller Lite’s online store for $19.33, with all proceeds benefit Equality Federation.

, Miller Lite Publishes Beers & Queer History Book“These bars were key meeting places where people felt at home. They offered safety, security and a sense of belonging that their patrons couldn’t necessarily get elsewhere,” says James Nanney, senior marketing manager for Miller Lite explained to Beer & Beyond. “We’re showcasing the history of these bars, but they’re just as important today as they were 50 years ago.”

The book’s name “Beers & Queer History,” is to ensure the inclusion of all LGBTQ+ identities. Once a slur word the term, “queer” has been reclaimed by members of the community, who encourage its use to be inclusive. And Miller Lite hopes the book will serve as a reference for the next generation of queer voices.

For Cervini, the book continued his exploration of LGBTQ+ history— work that’s won him acclaim over his career as a historian, author, scholar and media personality.

“It was thrilling as a historian to get an opportunity to dive into the stories of one of my favorite topics, historical queer spaces,” he says. “I’m honored to share these stories in partnership with Miller Lite as queer history so often goes unshared with mainstream society.”

The book is part of Miller Lite’s “Open & Proud” campaign, which combines public outreach and education to help make bars safer, more inclusive places for the LGBTQ+ community.

Miller Lite, as well as the Molson Coors Beverage Company its part of, have long supported the LGBTQ+ community. Miller Lite’s support dates back to the 1970s, and it first sponsored New York’s Pride parade in 1997.
