We’re big fans of Guinness, it’s one of our favorite mass-market beers. In fact, on a recent craft beer junket to Ireland we, more times than not, ended our evening in some vintage pub, with a Guinness in hand.
So yeah, we enjoy a good pint of Guinness from time to time, but is a better beer for your health?
Known for its rich flavor and creamy head, Guinness actually has a few health perks that set it apart from other beers.
And here are seven reasons why Guinness might be a healthier option when you’re reaching for a pint.
Lower in Calories Than You Think
Despite its dark, heavy appearance, Guinness Draught is relatively low in calories. A 12-ounce serving contains around 125 calories, which is fewer than many light beers and far less than most craft IPAs by far. Its rich flavor means you might be satisfied with just one or two, too.
Rich in Antioxidants
Guinness contains antioxidants similar to those found in fruits and vegetables, including flavonoids. These compounds can help protect your cells from oxidative stress and reduce the risk of heart disease.
Heart-Healthy Properties
Some studies suggest that moderate consumption of Guinness could have a positive effect on heart health. One study even found that Guinness might reduce the risk of blood clots and lower the risk of heart attacks, thanks to its antioxidant content.
Contains Iron (Just a Little) But Mor Than Most
While you’d have to drink a whole lot of Guinness to get your daily iron intake (not recommended!), it does contain more iron than many other beers. Iron is essential for transporting oxygen in the blood, and though it’s not a major source, every little bit helps.
Lower Alcohol Content
Guinness has an ABV (alcohol by volume) of about 4.2%, which is lower than most mainstream beers. That means fewer calories from alcohol and less strain on your liver—provided you drink in moderation.
Nitrogen Bubbles = Less Bloating
Unlike most beers that use carbon dioxide, Guinness Draught is partially carbonated with nitrogen, which gives it a smoother texture and less of that bloated, gassy feeling. That’s why it feels lighter going down than many fizzy lagers.
No High Fructose Corn Syrup or Preservatives
Guinness is brewed with simple, natural ingredients—water, barley, hops, and yeast. You won’t find high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, or preservatives, making it a cleaner option compared to many mass-market beers.
