Bad Ideas In Brewing – The Virtual Beer Mile App

|August 30th, 2018|

Hey, no one’s perfect…as we at American Craft Beer understand better than most. That said, there are some brewing ideas out there that are insanely misguided. So welcome to another BAD IDEAS IN BREWING…and we’re blaming a Canadian app developer, with too much time on his hands, for this one!

If you thought that recent reports of a new deer beer weren’t tasteless enough, or that beer ideas couldn’t get any stupider that a beer keg golf bag, there’s a mind-numbing new app where players can participate of the infamous beer mile race that you can waste your time with without the shame of public intoxication.

Here’s The Deal

A software developer has created an app were users can participate in a virtual Beer Mile, an actual four lap race on a standard 400 meter track where competitors must chug a can of beer every lap and clock the best speed without barfing.

Although these Beer Mile competitions (which are held in secret) strike us as fairly inane exercise to begin with, they’ve a huge cult-like following and attract serious runners around the world, renowned for their athletics, as they are for not throwing up during the race…

Ontario-based software engineer Hunter Aldrin, who according to Runners World shared a house with some big-name Beer Mile champions (yep, there really are Beer Mile champions) was encouraged by his housemates to pursue this virtual endeavor. But keep in mind, those guys think that the Beer Mile itself is a good idea.

The app’s description sums it up perfectly. It’s also the ultimate reflection on where we are as a society…

“Chugging! Running! Barfing! All the fun of the beer mile without the public intoxication. I mean, you can be intoxicated when you play, just maybe not publicly. Then again, who are we to judge?”

Just as with the actual Beer Mile competition, the goal of the app is to run and consume several virtual beers beer the fastest time. Users can control the movement of their virtual runner, making sure that their avatar doesn’t burp before the beer foam levels fill up.

If this happens, the virtual runner will vomit digitally (which we’re really look forward to seeing on our iPhone) and return to the start line.

Bottom Line

Although the Beer Mile app might appeal to that unemployed segment, who’ve tired of Snapchat and find twitter to demanding, we can’t help but see an app that memorializes the Beer Mile, as inherently misguided to begin with…

After all, at least the actual Beer Mile provides some athletic comradery and affords a welcome beer opportunity…never mind the stench of sweat and the occasional pools of vomit,

The Beer Mile app is available on iTunes free of charge for IOS and Android devices….so you’ve been warned!
