So welcome to this week’s edition of our awesome Weekend Picks.
Monstrous Merriment in the Nation’s Capital (Washington, DC) – We’d be hyping this festival even if they hadn’t afforded us media passes – it’s just that good! This Saturday, the 19th, marks the return of Snallygaster to Washington DC. Described as a “gargantuan beer jamboree” by some and as “an epic day of inimitable imbibery” by others, Snallygaster just might be the best craft beer event to revisit DC since SAVOR. Snallygaster 2013 promises over 214 craft beers all personally curated by DC beer wizard, Greg Engert (ChurchKey, Blue Jacket) so be ready for a beer layout far beyond the usual. Expect to see extraordinary seasonal German imports and Oktoberfest’s alongside rare releases major players like Reason Be Damned, a red wine barrel-aged Strong Blond Ale, that’s never been poured in DC before. For more info on the best craft beer event in the country this weekend check out: Snallygaster 2013
On The Big Screen – With Halloween closing in on us get ready for an onslaught of scary movies – and it begins in earnest this weekend. As many of you may know, Carrie is a remake of Brian De Palma’s horror classic and has big shoes to fill. Chlöe Moretz’s steps in to a role Sissy Spacek made famous, as Carrie White, a shy young outcast, bullied by her schoolmatesand sheltered by her deeply religious mother, who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom. Sometimes horror remakes can surprise and even surpass the originals like 1982’s The Thing or 1966’s The Fly, so we’re hopeful.
Up New Hampshire Way (Portsmouth NH) – Set on the grounds of beautiful Redhook Ale Brewery, the 5th Annual New Hampshire Brewfest is being presented as a special fundraiser for the Prescott Park Arts Festival in partnership with Master Brewers Association of America and WHEB’s The Morning Buzz. This three-session event unfolds this Saturday, 10/19 and admission includes a 5oz souvenir sampler cup, live music and unlimited access to over 100 beers from over 35 of this country’s most serious breweries! For more info on what promises to be too much fun check out: NH Brewfest
TV Time – Showtime’s Masters of Sexactually debuted a couple of weeks ago but in the age of on-demand and “binge-watching” that matters not. Created by Michelle Ashford, who wrote for HBO’s John Adams and the TV show 21 Jump Street, Masters of Sex is based on the true-life tale of ’60s sex researchers William Masters and Virginia Johnson, and seeks to do for sex what Mad Men did for advertising. Masters features plenty of nudity, and beautifully recreates the era with smarts and humor British actor Michael Sheen adopts an American accent as the Washington University professor and fertility expert, William Masters. But it’s Lizzy Caplan who stars a former nightclub singer tapped by Sheen to be his assistant who’s at the winning heart of this promising series.
