No and low-alcohol beer sales soared 37% during Dry January according to latest data from Kantar, a leading insights consultancy headquartered in London.

A You.Gov poll conducted by Alcohol Change UK last December, found that one in ten drinkers had planned to take part in Dry January 2020. And now Drinkaware an independent alcohol education charity, funded largely by voluntary donations from UK alcohol producers, retailers and supermarket is reporting that many who stopped drinking alcohol in January have cut their intake for good…

, Dry January Beer Sales Soar In The UKThe UK non-profit, which works to reduce alcohol abuse recenly  published a study which found that almost three quarters (72%) of people who had cut their alcohol intake or stopped drinking last month plan to continue in the long-term, with 12% of that number saying they are planning to stop drinking completely.

According to Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Kantar, sales of alcohol in January dipped 20% compared to the ‘normal’ months of February to November…but noted that 15 million households still bought alcohol during that period…

In January versus December the January sales are half those of December, but only 20% down on a normal, non- Christmas month…So while that is sizeable, it’s not as if nobody is buying alcohol – over half of households bought it. Despite the noise around Dry January, alcohol sales are still considerable.”

McKevitt also noted that while the no and low larger had grown, the category still only accounted for around 4% of total lager sales.
