A World Health Organization (WHO) ‘expert’ has called alcohol consumption an “unhelpful” strategy to cope with boredom during coronavirus lockdown.

And while we understand the comment’s context, we think the WHO official was throwing a very wide net given that alcohol use or abuse can vary widely.

The warning came at a time when alcohol retailers are being overwhelmed by surging wine, beer and spirits sales as countries mandate differing lockdown policies around the world.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said that people should stay at home wherever possible and only leave the house when absolutely necessary, or for one form of exercise per day. Pubs, bars and restaurants have been ordered closed but still allow for takeaway service.

Over the weekend a rumor circulated, claiming that the Simon Stevens, the chief executive NHS, had ordered the ban of alcohol sales and consumption in the UK, according to the Drinks Business. That rumor was later proven false.

In Greenland Prime Minister, Kim Kielsen has banned alcohol in the Capital City of Nuuk, stating that its consumption makes people “less aware of the danger of contamination”. He also said that he made that decision to protect children and make sure they have “a safe home” (!).

South Africa, the epicenter of the Covid-19 outbreak on that continent, has enforced strict lockdown measures including banning “walking for exercise’ and the sale and export of alcohol through April 16.

Citing reasons for the alcohol ban, the South Africa government said that booze reduces a person’s ability to practice social distancing and practice good personal hygiene.

The ban also stated that alcohol can affect the immune system making people more susceptible to disease and increase incidents of domestic violence at home.
