Hey it’s Wednesday and it’s Rumor Mill Time…New Belgium Brewing racked up another big award this week – and we were once again denied. We’ll have more on that as well as other things breaking right now in the world of craft beer. Plus we’ve an all-important update on what we’ve been drinking lately.

New Belgium Awarded A SUSTY (Washington, DC) –New Belgium Brewing was recently honored by the American Sustainable Business Council, which represents more than 200,000 businesses nationwide. The much-awarded brewery received a SUSTY (short for Sustainable Policymakers) award, which recognizes leadership in driving forward policies that help build a more environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable America.

ACB Denied A SUSTY Again (Washington, DC) – American Craft Beer LLC was once again overlooked by the American Sustainable Business Council and left empty-handed. “As happy as we are for Kim Jordan and the entire New Belgium crew, we can’t help but be disappointed,” said ACB’s Editor-In-Chief Tom Bobak. “We’re no longer leaving our Chinese carry-out cartons in public parks and we’ve started donating our empty beer bottles to local charities.”

Startup Brewpub Offers Beer for Life (Garland, TX) – We don’t normally cover the many startup pitches that we receive almost daily – but this was an offer we couldn’t refuse. The founders of Intrinsic Brewing LLC, Cary & Molly Hodson, are attempting to crowdfund their dream of building a brewpub in a historic building in Garland, Texas, with a “Beer for Life: offer that caught our attention.

Wolves & People (Newberg, OR) – And while we’re breaking our crowdfunding rule, we want to let you know about the Wolves & People. It’s an ambitious farmhouse brewery project in Oregon’s wine country that’s being led by founder and veteran beer writer Christian DeBenedetti (WeeklyPint.com; The Great American Ale Trail), along with Jordan Keeper, former head brewer of Jester King Brewery.Wolves & People will focus on Belgium-inspired American wild ales, saisons, sours, and barrel-aged beers – and you can help our friends out by goinghere.

What We’ve Been Drinking Lately (Washington, DC) – We’d like to thank all of the American craft breweries who ship us beer from time to time. It’s great to be able to sample the brews that we write about and it helps us have a better feel for what’s happening out there. Last night, the temperatures in DC plummeted – so it was a perfect time to build a fire and break open the new anniversary ale we recently received from Firestone Walker. The brewery’s special anniversary ales are all epic, barrel-aged, and blended productions, but they’ve outdone themselves this time around. This year, 14 regional vintners worked with Brewmaster Matt Brynildson to help create a beer that is greater than the sum of its parts. Firestone Walker XVIII Anniversary Ale is a massive 13% ABV creation that blended together 227 oak barrels and nine different component beers, and it paired insanely well with our roaring fire.
