THE AMERICAN CRAFT BEER- QUICK HITS – August 12, 2013
We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates – things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed. So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were enjoying yourselves.
Sam Sitcom in the Works (Milton, DE) – In yet another example of the cross-pollination going on with the craft beer industry and the entertainment biz (see Drinking Buddies), Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Fox is looking to develop a show based on the life of Sam and Mariah Calagione, the founders of Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales. The proposed show is said to be using the story of the brewery’s early years as a backdrop.
The Rebirth of a Legend (Washington, DC) – The Heurich House Museum will be celebrating DC Beer Week tonight by hosting a very special beer launch and fundraiser toasting DC Brau and the DC Homebrewers for a historical recreation of Heurich’s Lager, a pre-prohibition beer that hasn’t been available for at least 60 years. Jeff Hancock and Brandon Skall from DC Brau, as well as the DC Homebrewers who created the beer, will be on hand to discuss their creation. This project is part of the Heurich House Museum’s continuing efforts to honor the legacy of Christian Heurich, to preserve and maintain his historic home, and to promote local history and culture.
Stone Plans for Increased Ruination (Escondido, CA) – One of the by-products of craft beer’s tremendous growth and popularity is a generation of self-proclaimed hopheads accustomed to drinking higher alcohol beers. With that in mind, Beerpulse is reporting that Stone Brewing will be upping the ante on their signature Ruination IPA. Look for Stone’s Ruination to go from 7.7% ABV to 8.2% ABV in the near future.
Nation’s Capital Sours on New Belgium! (Washington, DC) –New Belgium’s sensory specialist Lauren Salazar, regarded by many as a leading expert on wild ales, will be giving a very special Sour Blending Workshop at The Black Squirrel in the Nation’s capital this Thursday. We believe that a few tickets may still be available but act fast because these tickets are precious. Salazar is orchestrating only five of these events this year: in Portland, San Diego, Chicago, Asheville, N.C., and this week’s in DC!
Wish You Were Beer (Madison, AL) – That’s a great name for an even better idea! Northern Alabama’s soon-to-open Wish You Were Beer will be the first bottle shop and taproom in the area entirely dedicated to craft beer, according to AL.com. Recent changes to Alabama’s archaic beer laws have made it easier for out-of-state craft beers to make their way into the state so we predict that you’re going to see a lot more of these kinds of retail outlets going forward.
Atlas to Launch Next Month (Washington, DC) – Our friends at Atlas Brew Works will be launching their line the week of September 2nd and we’re excited for them. Atlas plans to debut three beers that week at coming-out parties all over the city, including Rowdy (a hoppy American-style rye ale), District Common (a California Common featuring Czech Saaz hops), and a third beer and NSFW, which will remain a surprise.
