Memorial Day is the one day every year when America stops what it's doing to remember its fallen men and women who heroically served in the United States Armed Forces. It also marks the unofficial start of the summer vacation season - a time for outdoor barbeques and friends and family getting together over food and drinks.

And since we've no doubt that all of American Craft Beer's Regional Correspondents are going to be out and about celebrating their long holiday weekend, we thought we'd hit them up to see what they'll be eating and drinking this Memorial Day.

When you're the new kid on a block that is already filled with other fine craft breweries, you need to be unique and different. Even more importantly, you need to brew really great beer. Newburyport Brewing's co-owners Chris Webb and Bill Fisher (along with their award-winning brewmaster Mike Robinson) are doing just that and so much more! Not only are they helming Massachusetts' only "keg and can" brewery and crafting their three flagship beers, they are also finding time to play in an 8-piece funk band.

We blame the industry for this... It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates - things were pretty much done. But clearly all that's changed. So here's some of what's happened in the world of craft beer while you were enjoying your weekend.

Now is an amazing time to be a Bostonian. The Public Gardens are in bloom. Sailboats are back on the Charles. We can get craft beer delivered to our doorsteps, and soon we'll be having our first ever major music festival, right in the heart of downtown, complete with its very own beer garden and The National as headliners. Life is good.

There's no denying that a firm connection exists between those who love craft beer and those who love running; in fact, one of the more dynamic subcultures of beer lovers, affectionately known as "beer runners," has successfully intertwined these two unlikely activities. This group has literally tackled its share of hills and valleys, but yesterday's tragedy at this year's Boston Marathon has to be one of the biggest tests of perseverance and strength this trail-blazing crew has had to face.
