THE AMERICAN CRAFT BEER- QUICK HITS – April 29, 2013

We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates – things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed. So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were enjoying your weekend.

Boston Beer TM’s “Boston Strong” (Boston, MA) – The Boston Beer Company appears to be making the moves that would allow it to rename their annual marathon beer with an eye towards supporting the victims of this year’s tragedy. According to the Boston Globe, “Boston Beer, the maker of Samuel Adams, has filed a trademark for “Boston Strong” 26.2 Brew in the beer category.”

And before any of you run out and shoot yourselves, rest assured the pilsner will remain its classic self.

Big News from the Funky Buddha (Oakland, FL) – The Funky Buddha Lounge and Brewery, which first opened its doors in 2010 in Boca Raton, announces the arrival of Funky Buddha Brewery, a full-scale production brewery and taproom located in the heart of Oakland Park. This unique facility – the first of its kind in Broward County – will instantly become South Florida’s largest capacity brewery, offering a spacious bar with 30 tap lines, live music, brewery tours, growlers to-go, and much more. A grand opening and ribbon cutting is scheduled for June 1 at 4 pm.

Brew U (Fort Collins, CO) – To help educate a new generation of brewers, Colorado State has just unveiled plans to open a brewery in the university’s student center. According to the Coloradoan.com, the university is “planning to install a brewery in Lory Student Center’s pub called the Ramskeller.” The small, six-barrel system would be Fort Collin’s 13th brewery and provide students with hands-on training in the art of brewing “serious” beer.

Port City Goes Heavy Metal (Washington, DC)Port City Brewing Company and DC fuzz rockers Borracho have announced that they’ll be teaming up to create a limited-edition beer–Borracho Smokin’ Brown Ale–to be released on May 18 at The Pinch in Columbia Heights, where the band will be headlining that evening.
