Summer is just around the corner and American craft brewers are welcoming the warming weather with fun new variety packs that make buying beer in bulk cool again.
Tröegs Summer Better Variety 15-Pack
Like Firestone Walker, Hershey PA’s Tröegs Independent Brewing always delivers interesting variety packs, and their latest is very solid. Plus we like its amusing name (Summer Better, get it?) and that it’s a 15-Pack which is three beers better, right?
Tröegs latest features four of their most popular offerings (always an IPA or two) and something new that’s only available in this summertime package. In addition to three dynamic IPAs the Summer Better 15-Pack skews to the lighter side of things and here’s how Tröegs explains them…
Perpetual IPA (7.5% ABV) – Artisanal meets mechanical in a state of IPA we call Perpetual. Cycling through our HopBack vessel and dry-hopping method, this bold Imperial Pale Ale emerges rife with sticky citrus rind, pine balm and tropical fruit. We taste: citrus, notes of pine, subtle grain
Sunshine Pilsner (4.5% ABV) – It takes the right ingredients, people and processes to nail the complex balance of two-row barley, zesty Saaz hops and lager yeast. Secondary fermentation creates natural carbonation that delivers soft notes of fresh-cut straw and flowering herbs. In the end, this bright and refreshingly clean American craft pilsner is our go-to when the sun is shining and makes us happy when skies are gray.
Perpetual Haze (7.5% ABV) – This beer combines the clean, crisp bitterness of a West Coast IPA and the softness of a hazy. Pale malts lay down an underlying complexity. Raw wheat, London 3 yeast and vigorous dry-hopping stir up a haze that cradles the citrusy hop combination. Front and center are Citra and Cashmere, unlocking juicy notes of orange, passionfruit and nectarine.
Summer’s Here Lager (4.2% ABV) – Bring on those summer vibes with this petite yet flavorful lager. Starting with pilsner malt and flaked rice, we employ krausening to lend a crisp finish and subtle fruity esters. Dry-hopping with Citra and Saaz unveils notes of bright citrus, lemon rind and flowering herbs. This beer is only available in this 15-pack.
Field Study IPA (6.5% ABV) – In the hop fields we daydream and study, and at the brewery we tinker and test. For Field Study, dry-hopping delivers notes of ripe grapefruit, mango, pear and melon. Add a backbone of local rustic pale malt, and Field Study is just what we were after: a slightly hazy yet bright summer daydream come true.
Schlafly The Weekender 12-Pack
Schlafly Beer, St. Louis’ original craft brewery, has released a new variety pack that’s perfect for those summertime getaways we’ll all be doing. And we particularly like the approachable mix of options in this one.
This pack includes three cans each of four interesting beer styles and this is how Schlafly describes them…
Kölsch (ABV: 4.8%): Done properly and with distinction, this definitive golden ale is fermented with a yeast strain from Koln, Germany – where Kölsch originated. The result is a slightly dry and subtly malty brew with the delicate aroma of an ale and the clean finish of a lager.
No Bounds Brown Ale (ABV: 5.6%): The perfect blend of American and European malts to create notes of caramel, biscuits, and subtle hints of honey and chocolate, balanced with hop bitterness from American Ale yeast, allowing the malts to shine.
Raspberry Hefeweizen (ABV: 4.1%): A true fruit beer – not a fruit-flavored beer, this brew uses real raspberries during primary fermentation. This naturally yields a pink, hazy-colored brew with citrus aromas from the wheat and a desirable flavor that is neat and tart. Low in bitterness and not overwhelmingly sweet, this is our brewer’s summer water.
Hazy Getaway IPA (ABV: 4.0%): With only 110 calories, this golden IPA sways to the lighter side, but is still packed with juicy hop flavors with an unfiltered haze.
