The famous film director, Guillermo Del Toro’s face and film characters recently ended up on Victoria beer cans in Mexico without his approval…

What’s Spanish for pissed?

Acclaimed film director Guillermo del Toro called out the maker of Victoria beer for using his image and two characters in his films on beer cans without his permission.

The beer cans, which featured Del Toro’s portrait as well as fantasy characters from the films Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water, were designed by illustrator Guy Davis and were printed without the film director’s permission, according to the Mexico News Daily.

Unlike the many unauthorized usage disputes that end in court in the US, the Oscar-winning film director was more generous in his demands to be compensated for the brewery’s action.

The filmmaker took to twitter to denounce Grupo Modelo, who produce the Victoria brand, and rather than threaten litigation “urged the company to donate the profits earned from sales of the beer to young students competing in math and robotics competitions.”

This from Del Toro…

“Very badly done, Victoria. These cans do not have my authorization, my consultation or my signature to use my image or my name…”

While it’s not clear if the brewing company will end up donating money to Del Toro’s causes, Grupo Modelo did claim responsibility (Yah think?) and responded via Twitter.

“We would never take liberties with something like this, @RealGDT,” it wrote. “We are reviewing where the wires got crossed. Apart from this, we will continue to support Mexican talent as we have done up to now.”

The unauthorized, and sure to become ultra-collectable beer cans are currently available at convenience stores in Mexico City, Jalisco, San Luis Potosí, Michoacán, and México state.
