Hey, no one’s perfect…as we at American Craft Beer understand better than most. That said, there are some brewing ideas that should never have happened. And this is definitely one of them.
Here’s the Deal
We’ll never be fans of Corn Dog and Funnel Cake Beer or disturbing concepts like a beer brewed with goose poop. And while less egregious than a cricket beer, a chili cheese dip-flavored beer is a concerning concept that never should have been attempted.
On January 24th the brewing world, which is famous for pushing envelopes, was shocked to learn that Hormel Foods, an American food processing company based in Austin, MN, had enlisted the aid of a neighboring Minnesota brewery to craft a beer modeled after their beloved chili cheese dip recipe.
And in spite of a national outcry, Hormel Chili Cheese Brew, the spicy 5.5% ABV American lager that mimics the chili cheese dip recipe became available at both Modist and Hormel’s online sites where the outlandish beer sold out immediately, a sad indictment of the craft beer and/or Hormel Chili community.
Too be fair, Minneapolis, MN-based Modist Brewing took 100% responsibility for this misguided move (not that they should have).
“Yep. We did it. We gone and put cheese and Hormel Chili spices into a lager”
“When the folks at the makers of Hormel Chili reached out to us, our first thought was ‘Are we getting a C&D? For what?”
“But once we actually opened up the email and saw that they wanted to create an unexpected sip inspired by everybody’s favorite dip, Hormel Chili Cheese Dip, we were like ‘sure’ And then we did.”
Bottom Line
Chili cheese dip is something you should have along with your beer not in it…
As much as we like Modist Brewing, and understand that they like every brewery needs to show a profit, we can’t accept that modeling a beer after a canned chili producer’s cheese dip might ever be something that any brewery ever should attempt.
We’re capitalists here at American Craft Beer, so glad that this BAD IDEA IN BREWING sold out. But now it’s time to destroy anything you’ve in writing regarding Hormel Chili Cheese Brew. Don’t return any reporters’ calls and DENY, DENY, DENY.
