It’s hardly surprising that Anheuser-Busch InBev might be enhancing its cybersecurity defenses…But it does speak to increasingly dangerous times that the world largest brewer has now established its own cyber protection division.

Here’s the deal…

AB InBev, an expansive organization which controls over 400 different brands of beer including Budweiser, Corona, Stella Artois, Beck’s. Hoegaarden and Leffe has, like so many companies, been subject to an increasing number of cyber-attacks.

And to counter escalating threats such as ransomware and cybersecurity problems that haven’t even surfaced yet, the world’s largest global brewer has launched its own division in Israel, a country viewed by many including Entrepreneur “as a leader in online security and threat detection.”

Speaking to Reuters Luis Veronesi, AB InBev’s vice president of global security and compliance, explained that the company’s decision to open its own dedicated cybersecurity unit Tel Aviv was “financially motivated. “

Anheuser-Bausch InBev actually began its first tech operation in Israel last year with the acquisition of Tel Aviv-based WeissBeerger, a beverage consumption analytics startup, which aims to be the ‘Google Analytics of Beer.’

Weissbeerger’s flagship product, Alcohol Analytics, is designed “to track how much beer is being consumed in a bar, at what times, and which brands are the most popular,” via monitored beer taps that work in conjunction with the point-of-sale system (read: the cash register).

Alcohol Analytics hopes to provide a transparency to the draft beer on-premise process that’s been lacking and also minimize the amount of “freebies” that bartenders share with friends at the same time.

Israel 21c speculated at the time that the WeissBeerger acquisition might “become AB InBev’s research and development center in Israel.” And it’s possible that this dedicated cybersecurity unit in Israel could be seen as but the latest addition to this growing division.
