Craft Brewers Conference Inspires New Craft Beers in DC
Those lucky enough to be attending this week’s 2013 Craft Brewers Conference will be treated to more than just world-class seminars and brewer meet-and-greets. Visitors and attendees alike will have the opportunity to sample limited-edition and special release brews crafted solely for the conference week at area bars and restaurants. Here’s a taste of what you can expect from the creative minds of craft brewers from across country as they assemble at the Nation’s Capital.
Several of these new beers are coming out of DC Brau – the aptly named brewery that reps the Nation’s Capital almost as hard as Eleanor Holmes Norton. Taster’s Choice Coffee Doppelbock is a collaborative effort with Ska Brewing (and features influences from local Ska band, The Pietasters) that clocks in at 7.4% ABV and promises to be smooth and malty. Colliding Hemispheres Belgo-American Brown was brewed with Hop Union and Briess malts and features American malt characteristics mashed up with Belgian yeast and southern hemisphere hop flavors. Yonder Cities Farmhouse IPA was developed with Union Craft Brewing of Baltimore, MD, but was brewed separately at both brewhouses. Acute imbibers may be able to distinguish subtle differences between the two versions, which highlights the ‘farmhouse’ element. Finally, two DC Brau solo beers are hitting the taps – St. Joseph’s Tripel, a 10% ABV Belgian Tripel, and OTWOA (On the Wings of Armageddon), a prophetically named Imperial IPA.
North of the District, Flying Dog in Frederick, MD, is putting out Bloodline, a blood orange IPA, brewed with blood orange juice and peel along with a healthy dose of citrusy hops. Bloodline is a collaborative project between Flying Dog and the beer distributor Reyes Beverage Group.
Out of Rockville, MD, Baying Hound Aleworks has been working with a local Ska band to produce Originators Ale, an inspired Irish red ale that can be served at the various venues they play. Also in the works is a new IPA simply called Obey! (in keeping with their dog theme).
Last but not least is this year’s symposium beer, Beggars and Thieves, a collaboration between DC Brau, Devils Backbone Brewing Company (Lexington, VA) and The Brewer’s Art (Baltimore, MD). Touted as an “Anti-Imperial Rye Lager,” this session beer aims to promote flavorful and drinkable beers instead of those with ever-increasing IBU numbers or alcohol content.
If you’re already in town, don’t miss out on these (and tons of other beers) that will be available at local events around the area. And if you’re still on the fence about making the trip to DC – better step to it before these one-offs are kicked for good.
