|October 25th, 2013|

Hey it’s Friday…The weather’s changing and the weekend’s almost here. And with fall in the air, you’re more ready than ever for some serious fun. Well good, because we are on it! From the nation’s coolest beer festivals to movies, music, and cutting-edge TV – we’ve got your back big-time. So welcome to this week’s edition of our awesome Weekend Picks.

2013 DFBF-banner OnSaleNowMotor City Rolls Out The Fall Beers (Detroit, MI) – Join the Michigan Brewers Guild this weekend for one of the largest all-Michigan beer tastings ever at the 5th annual Detroit Fall Beer Festival. This two-day (10/25 -10/26) two-session event returns to Detroit’s Eastern Market, one of the nation’s oldest farmers markets and will feature more than 450 beers from more than 60 of the region’s best breweries. Local bands will be rockin’ and there’s going to be some great food there too. For more info on one of craft beer’s best festivals this weekend, check out: 5th Annual Detroit Fall Beer Festival

A Monstrous Craft Beer Tasting (Cleveland, OH) – Brewzilla is the name for a gargantuan beer tasting that’s taking place Saturday night (10/26) at the Galleria at Erieview in downtown Cleveland. This flagship event marks the conclusion of Cleveland Beer Week and will feature craft beer from more than 80 of the nation’s best breweries, a special “Ohio Brewery” area with various beers from local breweries, a Belgian Beer Garden, and tasty appetizers that pair well with craft brews. Brewer’s Circle tickets are $75 and include tastes of rare beers and food pairings in the Brewer’s Circle Lounge that’s open all evening. On The Big Screen – The movies opening this weekend pretty much run the gamut from a smart thriller with a killer cast to stupid Sacha Baron Cohen-inspired comedy starring Johnny Knoxville. The Counselor was written specifically for film by Cormac McCarthy, one of America’s most respected novelists. And unlike The Road, which began as a book and was eventually made into a movie, The Counselor was written as a film original and sold directly to Hollywood in a mega bidding war. Directed by the great Ridley Scott, this film stars Michael Fassbender, Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Brad Pitt, and Javier Bardem in a story about a lawyer who finds himself in over his head when he gets involved in drug trafficking.

On The Big Screen II – If you’re concerned The Counselor might get too violent or depressing, there’s always Bad Grandpa, which also opens nationally this weekend. This film star’s Johnny Knoxville who co-produced all the Jackass films – a series known for taking bad taste to a whole new level – so you know what you’re getting into here. Knoxville stars here as the 86-year-old Irving Zisman who wreaks havoc upon the unsuspecting as he journeys across America with his 8-year-old grandson.

American-Horror-Story-Coven-Season-3-Banner1TV Time – FX’s American Horror Story: Coven actually made its third season return a couple of weeks back but in the age of on-demand and “binge-watching” that matters not. And with Halloween nearing, we thought it might be a good time to mention this flawed but always-audacious horror anthology series. Each season tells a different story and takes place in different locations. It also features an extensive repertory cast who come in and out of the anthology playing entirely different characters in each season’s installments. Jessica Lange, for instance, played an aging and failed actress in the series debut, returned as a nun in last year’s Horror Story: Asylum, and stars as an alpha-witch in this year’s story. Unlike Mad Men or Breaking Bad, the American Horror Story anthology is far from great TV, but it can be scary, sexy, and fun, and this year’s American Horror Story:Coven continues that trend.
