The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – June 30, 2014
We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates -things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed.
So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were off enjoying yourselves.
This Budvar’s For You (Prague) – Czech brewery Budvar said on Thursday that the patent office in Lisbon had upheld a decision preventing its rival Anheuser-Busch from registering its beer under the Budweiser name trademark in Portugal. According to Houblon.net, Anheuser-Busch has been “battling with Budejovicky Budvar for the exclusive rights to the Budweiser name and others – such as Budvar – for over a century. Currently, they are involved in some 40 lawsuits worldwide.”
I’ll Have a Uranus Please (Kalamazoo, MI) – Bell’s Brewery will soon be kicking off their The Planets Series -seven beers inspired by different movements from Gustav Holst’s classical opus, “The Planets.” Beginning in August, the specialty beers will be released every two month, wrapping up in July 2015.The beers include: Venus, The Bringer of Peace – a Blonde Ale brewed with honey, apricot, vanilla, and cardamom; Mercury, The Winged Messenger – A Belgian Single; Jupiter, The Bringer of Jollity – a Brown Ale; Saturn, The Bringer of Old Age – a Bourbon barrel-aged Barleywine; Uranus, The Magician – a Black Double IPA; and Neptune, The Mystic – a Stout.

United Fight 312 (Chicago, IL) – We alluded in last week’s Rumor Mill that Goose Island Beer and United Airlines were possibly up to something – and we were right! On Friday, United and Goose Island announced that the two Chicago brands were teaming up to offer Goose Island’s 312 Urban Wheat Ale craft on all the airline’s flights worldwide and at United Clubs in the continental United States, beginning July 1. No word as yet as to whether United’s First Class passengers will be served Goose Island’s Lolita.
