Cooking With Beer – Guinness Chocolate Cake

Festive foods take on new meaning when made with serious beer, like this delicious chocolate cake that’s made even moister with the addition of classic stout.
This tasty recipe comes our way from Guinness and it uses the brewery’s Guinness Draught, a nitro-infused 4.2% ABV Irish Dry Stout known for its smooth, creamy texture and distinctively dark, velvety appearance. Brewed at St. James’s Gate in Dublin, it has become a global symbol of Irish heritage since its introduction in 1959.
Incredibly easy to make, this scrumptious cake will make you look like a cooking god!
And the beer really adds something special.
So let’s do this…
Guinness Chocolate Cake
Ingredients
- Butter (for the pan) as needed
- 1 cup Guinness stout
- 10 tbsp (1 stick + 2 tbsp) Unsalted butter
- ¾ cup Unsweetened cocoa
- 2 cups Superfine sugar
- ¾ cup Sour cream
- 2 Large eggs
- 1 tbsp Vanilla extract
- 2 cups All-purpose flour
- 2½ tsp Baking soda
Instructions:
Step 1
Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter a 9-inch springform pan and line with parchment paper. In a large saucepan, heat Guinness and butter over medium-low heat until butter melts. Remove from heat, then whisk in cocoa and superfine sugar.
Step 2
In a small bowl, mix sour cream, eggs, and vanilla. Add to the Guinness mixture. Whisk in flour and baking soda until smooth. Pour batter into the buttered pan and bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour, until risen and firm. Let cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.
Step 3
For the topping, blend confectioners’ sugar in a food processor or by hand to remove lumps. Add cream cheese and mix until smooth. Gradually add heavy cream, blending until smooth and spreadable.
Step 4
Remove cake from pan and place on a platter or cake stand. Ice only the top of the cake to resemble the frothy head of a pint of Guinness.
