Introduced in 1977, Natural Light was Anheuser-Busch’s first reduced-calorie light beer, instantly becoming a hit at colleges across the nation.
In 1995, Natural Ice debuted, featuring a higher ABV that quickly made it America’s best-selling ice beer.
In 2008, Natural Light shocked the world, taking bronze at the World Beer Cup for “American-style light lager”. With that honor in its pocket, Natural Light went into orbit in 2011, becoming the first beer in space.
And no matter your take on the beer, Natural Light has fun promotions… In 2021 Natural Light attempted to break the Guinness World record title for the longest plastic water slide (also known as slip and slide) at 2,007 feet. And they did!
They also sent two parents to Alaska and catered a beer-fueled party at the family compound while they were far away.
But now Natural Light may have gone too far, offering a year of free beer to one lucky winner brave enough to get a mullet haircut.
The mullet is a hairstyle where the hair is cut short at the front and sides, but is much longer at the back. Popular back in the 80s the style eventually became a joke.
Actor Kiefer Sutherland was widely reported to be the unwitting instigator of the style due to the director’s requirements for his lead role in the 1987 film The Lost Boys. He also confirmed part of the inspiration for his hairstyle came from Billy Idol. So there’s that.
But like most bad ideas it’s back….
According to Natural Light, the mullet was the most-searched hairstyle in 2021, and so in a nod to past glory or just to have fun Natty Light is offering consumers the chance to get their mullet haircut paid for and two free cases of Natural Light per month for as long as they keep the iconic hairdo.
You game? You are? You’ll have to act before March 31st…
Essentially, you’ll need to get a mullet haircut, post the unfortunate results on social media with the hashtags #NattyVintage and #sweepstakes to be in the running for a chance of winning a free haircut and two 24-packs of Natty Light in vintage cans. You’ll also need to be following Natural Light on social media.
“The mullet might be returning, but true Natty Fans know it never really went out of style,” said Daniel Blake, group VP for Budweiser and value at Anheuser-Busch told the Drinks Business.
“That’s why we want to make it easier than ever for fans to celebrate this iconic look. And though this hairdo has stood the test of time, these Natural Light Vintage Cans are limited edition so be sure to grab them before they’re gone!”
