|March 16th, 2022|

With St Patrick’s Day returning this week FinanceBuzz hit the streets to determine the price of a pint of Guinness beer in every US state and we’ve all the highs and lows for you.

Here’s the deal…

Guinness is one of the world’s most iconic beer brands, as well as a deeply woven part of Irish culture. There are fans of the dark dry stout all around the world and it’s one of the most valuable beer brands on the planet.

Historically on St. Patrick’s Day alone, millions of pints are consumed globally. With that in mind the online financial site FinanceBuzz came up the US states with the most affordable pints of Guinness, as well as the states you need to avoid like the plague on St Paddy’s Day.

To see where the most, and least expensive pints of Guinness are located throughout the U.S., FinanceBuzz collected the prices off online menus from pubs and bars across the nation and averaged the prices to find the cost per pint.

The most expensive locations are:

1 Montana $5.00
2 Alabama $5.35
3 Iowa $5.60
4 South Dakota $5.70
5 West Virginia $5.75
6 (tie) Georgia $5.90
6 (tie) New Hampshire $5.90
8 Vermont $6.00
9 (tie) Louisiana $6.05
9 (tie) Mississippi $6.05
9 (tie) Nebraska $6.05

If you’re drinking in California, Nevada, or DC and still plan to tip your bartender, a single pint will probably cost you double digits.

If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, the least expensive locations include:

1 Montana $5.00
2 Alabama $5.35
3 Iowa $5.60
4 South Dakota $5.70
5 West Virginia $5.75
6 (tie) Georgia $5.90
6 (tie) New Hampshire $5.90
8 Vermont $6.00
9 (tie) Louisiana $6.05
9 (tie) Mississippi $6.05
9 (tie) Nebraska $6.05

The national average for a pint of Guinness in the United States was $6.70.

Methodology Details

To fine tune its findings FinanceBuzz collected the price for a pint of draft Guinness from current menus or via email from five different pubs or bars in each state and then averaged those prices to find the average cost per pint in every state.

Guinness is traditionally served as a 20-ounce “imperial pint,” but some bars in this analysis serve a 16-ounce “American pint” instead. Pricing for each bar’s default pint size was used throughout. Price data was collected from February 14-February 21, 2022.
