UK Brewing Industry Reduces Carbon Emissions By 42%

The UK brewing industry has made significant environmental strides over the last decade according to a just released report by the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) who are all about these kinds of things…

Not only have UK breweries decreased its CO2 emissions by 42% in the last 10 years but the industry is now recovering 98% of its waste, according to numbers which were included in the association’s Brewing Green 2019 report which summarizes the industry’s achievements as well as its future environmental goals.

The big news was both the industry’s lessening of its carbon footprint but also its uber-impressive 98% waste recycling success.

According to the BBPA’s report the United Kingdom hop growers are also progressing…The UK is currently eighth in global hop production and fourth in terms of the varieties that are grown.

There’s also progress pub industry side of things.

The BBPA said 100% of its pub operators said that “reducing food waste and improving energy efficiency was important, or very important, to them,” with 86% of the pubs surveyed reporting that they were offering smaller portion sizes to reduce waste.

And 71% of the pub operators reported that they had installed smart meters allowing them more efficient energy usage.

The report also showcased a number earth-friendly initiatives that UK brewers (both majors and independents) had taken on…

These included packaging innovations by Carlsberg, Diageo and AB InBev; use of leftover bread in brewing by Toast Ale.

The report also called attention the progressive energy targets set by AB InBev, Molson Coors, Heineken and Carlsberg…water and sustainability directives now employed  by a number of breweries including Fullers, Hobsons, Freedom, the Bermondsey Beer Company and Robinsons.

Brigid Simmonds, chief executive of the British Beer & Pub Association waxed poetic about the UK Brewing and pub industry’s advancements…

“From reducing emissions to lowering waste, Britain’s breweries and pubs are determined to be world leaders in environmental sustainability and meet the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.”
