Hey it’s Friday and we’re heading into the weekend. So you’re still getting over your long holiday break and not yet adjusted to being back at work. You’ve got to be hurting getting back in the swing and you’re in need of a fun weekend. That’s where we come in! We’re all about the fun and we’ve got you covered. , The American Craft Beer Weekend Picks – January 18, 2013Hey, we know that you get mad at us when we pick events that don’t actually take place over the weekend – BUT WE DON’T CARE! Not when there’s something as cool as THE INAUGURAL BREWER’S BALL that’s taking place next Monday (1/21) at ChurchKey in Washington, DC. This will be an inaugural event that you don’t want to miss! It will feature ten of the nation’s most exciting brewers and they will be bringing in some of their most interesting brews to celebrate with you!This is a killer opportunity to mix and mingle with some of the brewing community’s brightest stars including Rob Tod of Allagash Brewing Company, Sean Lily Wilson of Fullsteam, Dan Kopman of Schlafly Beer, Tim Adams of Oxbow, and David Yarrington of Smuttynose, as well as, Mark Thompson of Starr Hill Brewery, Jim Caruso of Flying Dog Brewery and Hugh Sisson of Heavy Seas. Also in the house: local heroes like DC Brau’s Brandon Skall & Jeff Hancock and 3 Stars Brewing Company’s Dave Coleman & Mike McGarvey, all of whom will show off their finest ales on the ChurchKey taps for the night. In addition to sampling some of the rarest and most delicious American craft brews out there, you will also be treated to an endless parade of stationed and passed plates from Executive Chef Kyle Bailey & Pastry Chef Tiffany MacIsaac – so prepare to be over-served! We like Mark Wahlberg – we like Russell Crowe – and we really like Catherine Zeta-Jones so we’re thinking that Broken City (which opens this weekend) could be fun! In “Broken City” ex-cop Billy Taggart (Wahlberg) seeks redemption and revenge , The American Craft Beer Weekend Picks – January 18, 2013after being double-crossed and then framed by the city’s mayor (Crowe). “Broken City” is directed by Allen Hughes who’s made some good films in the past, including “Menace II Society” and the sorely overlooked “The Book of Eli.”

IT IS ON this weekend in Alaska because the Great Alaska Beer & Barleywine Festival will be taking place tonight and tomorrow (Jan 18th – 19th) at the Egan Convention Center in Anchorage. There will be three tasting sessions (including a connoisseur session on Saturday), each with 200 barleywine-style beers, winter warmers (and you’ll need them up there) and seasonals from 50 of the region’s best brewers! If you’ve been watching the NFL Playoffs, you’ve got to admit that they’ve all been pretty awesome this year. There are Two Big Games on Sunday and we wouldn’t miss either of them! The 49ers will be battling the Falcons in Atlanta at 3 pm EST and the Ravens will be playing the Patriots up in Boston at 8 pm EST!

Our Weekend Beer Picks

The Brooklyn Brewery’sDry Irish Stout is being released in six-packs and it’s hitting the streets now. This beer is brewed the old-fashioned way using large amounts of roasted grains and East Golding hops and it shows. And if you’ve never tried this beer – now’s the time.

Full Sail Brewing Company has just announced the release of a new rotating line of classic ales called the Pub Series and the first beer in the series is Full Sail Nut Brown Ale, which they describe as a smooth,malty, easy-drinking dark beer and we’re just fine with that.Nut Brown Ale is available in 6-packs and on draft for 90 days only from January to March when the next beer in the series will be released.
