BREWERY VISITS & TOURS:

At Smuttynose, tours and tastings are offered Fridays at 5:30 PM and Saturdays at 11:00 AM. If you’d like to inquire about arranging a private tour for a larger group, contact us. Naturally, we recommend rounding out your visit to Smuttynose with a trip to our sister company, the Portsmouth Brewery, New Hampshire’s original brewpub, located in downtown Portsmouth, less than five miles away. If you will be bringing your children with you as you tour Smuttynose, please keep them with you at all times. Also, we urge you to wear appropriate footwear, avoiding sandals, open-toed shoes or flip-flops. We’ve got fittings, hoses, puddles, cleaning chemicals, hot things, cold things and heavy machinery. These are all interesting things but we’d much rather tell you about them than have you experience them first hand. You’re better off experiencing the final product – Smuttynose beer (unless of course you are a child).

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION:

Our company is named for Smuttynose Island, the third largest of the nine islands that comprise the Isles of Shoals, a small, rocky archipelago that lies seven miles off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine. The name appears on nautical charts going back as far as the seventeenth century, so its true origins are lost to time. Prior to the arrival of Smuttynose Brewing, the island was best known for a brutal double axe murder that occurred there in 1873. Smuttynose beers are distributed in nineteen states and the District of Columbia, from Maine to Florida and as far west as Wisconsin.
