THE AMERICAN CRAFT BEER- QUICK HITS – September 23, 2013

|September 23rd, 2013|

We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates – things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed. So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were enjoying yourselves.

5 Stupid Questions with UK’s Bad Boys of Brewing (Washington, DC) – Fasten your seat belts everyone because things are guaranteed to get rocky when we subject BrewDog’sJames Watt and Martin Dickie to 5 Stupid Questions on Tuesday. James and Martin are the founders of the fastest growing brewery in the UK and they’ve just completed a new craft beer television series that’s getting ready to debut nationally on the Esquire Network. These guys are a mess and we love them, so be sure to check out our exclusive with the UK’s “bad boys of brewing” tomorrow.

Brewers Association Economist Addresses the Craft Beer “Non” Bubble (Boulder, CO) – Many of us have heard the “craft beer bubble” question arise before. You know the one – about whether we’re headed towards a craft beer bubble (or not). No doubt, the Brewers Association gets asked this question a lot and they’ve just published their position: The Craft Beer (Non) Bubble. We found their take thoughtful and persuasive and we want the best for our industry…it’s just that we worry.

Dogfish InnLet’s Spend The Night Together (Milton, DE) – Looks like Sam Calagione and crew might beat Greg Koch in opening a brewery hotel. Stone has long planned to open a hotel near their brewery in Escondido and now comes word that Dogfish Head will be opening a 16-room hotel in Lewes, Delaware. Look for the Dogfish Inn to open in late spring of 2014.

Somber Times In Sin City? (Las Vegas, NV) – Our friends at the National Beer Wholesalers Association will be throwing their national meetings out in Vegas later this month. And even though we’ve no doubt that this will be a terrific event, the specter of Big Beer’s decline might dampen festivities for some. Advertising Age reports that the “industry’s biggest players, Anheuser-Busch InBev and MillerCoors, whose mega-brands have dominated America’s tap handles and supermarket shelves for decades, are being battered by a new wave of competition from inside and outside the beer market and starting to lose their grip.”

Left Handed Acts of God (Longmont, CO) – We’ve been all over the floods that ravaged the Boulder region and its neighbors last weekend. With the waters now abating, amazing stories of survival and close calls are coming in. As we alluded to in last week’s Quick Hits, Longmont’s Left Hand Brewing clearly came close to calamity. The brewery, located northeast of Boulder, sits right next to the then-surging St. Vrain River, and at one point, all of its buildings were surrounded by water, according to the Boulder Weekly. Eric Wallace, the Co-Founder and President of the brewery, tells the weekly that “Left Hand survived — by an inch.”
