The American Craft Beer Quick Hits – June 9, 2014
We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates -things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed.
So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were off enjoying yourselves.
An Insider Looks at the Invitational (Paso Robles, CA) – We ran into a lot of our friends from the Los Angeles craft beer writers community while we were in Paso last weekend for Firestone Walker’s Invitational. They’re a great group of people to hang with and they’ve totally got the LA beer scene down. One of our favorites, John Verive, who writes for many publications including the LA Times, as well as for his site, the excellent Beer Of Tomorrow, just published An “Insider’s” Look The Firestone Walker Invitational and you should check it out.
Florida Man Calls 911 Seven Times Over Missing Beer (West Palm Beach, FL) – We all value beer here at ACB and we understand how its disappearance might cause one to panic. But even at our most manic, we don’t think we’d have done this. In a sobering article, The Daily News is reporting that “A Florida man has been arrested for repeatedly making false 911 calls complaining that his wife had “thrown out his beer.” Over the course of four hours, Carlos Bueno Mir reportedly phoned 911 seven times.
June Beer Week Alert (Anywhere, USA) – The whole beer week thing has grown considerably over the last decade. Thanks to the growth of craft beer itself, grassroots support from local craft beer fans and merchants and national campaigns sponsored by groups such as the Brewers Association, it seems like there’s always a beer week happening somewhere. Portland Beer Week (June 5th – 15th) just kicked off last weekend. Des Moines Beer Week started yesterday (June 8th – 14th). Knoxville’s Craft Beer Week (June 14th – 21st) starts next weekend and New Hampshire Craft Week (June 21st – 28th) begins the next. Please adjust your travel schedules appropriately.
New Digs for the Brewers Association (Boulder, CO) – In a failed effort to blow us off, the Brewers Association has moved to a different office in Boulder. Their new address is:
1327 Spruce St. Boulder, CO 80302
Their phone, PO Box, and fax numbers all remain the same.
Another Reason to Get Married (Boston, MA) – Craft beer is fast becoming as important as the wine chosen for wedding celebrations, and in keeping with this growing trend, Sam Adams has been brewing a special, one-day-only limited release wedding ale for the last three years. Described as a Belgian-style “bride ale,” Brewlywed Ale will only be available at the Boston Brewery on June 18. That only gives you nine days to “pop the question” – so get on it.
