THE AMERICAN CRAFT BEER- QUICK HITS – February 25, 2013
We blame the industry for this… It used to be that when we wrapped up our Weekend Picks on Friday, we could coast through the weekend. There was little need to check in for updates – things were pretty much done. But clearly all that’s changed. So here’s some of what’s happened in the world of craft beer while you were enjoying your weekend.
Flying Dog Presents “Festival de Cans” at This Year’s Craft Brewers Conference (Frederick, MD) – As the craft beer industry descends upon the District this March for this year’s CBC, Flying Dog Brewery will be presenting the Festival de Cans – a beer-focused film festival at DC’s iconic 9:30 Club. On Thursday, March 28, Flying Dog will be taking over the club with The Brewer’s Art, Brooklyn, DC Brau, Golden Road, Half Acre, Maui, New Belgium, Oskar Blues, Sierra Nevada, and Starr Hill. Emceed by comedian Doug Powell, the festival will explore the evolution of beer advertising and the craft industry’s impact. Each brewery has submitted a commercial or short film that will be screened alongside some of the best vintage beer commercials beginning at 8 pm. Brooklyn-based funk band Escort will also be performing – their debut LP was named one of the top releases of 2012 by Rolling Stone Magazine.
Epic Goes West (Salt Lake City, UT) – After almost three years in business, Epic Brewing Company is set to expand its reach to Washington State with an aggressive line of 17 brews. Epic is currently available in twelve states, including the District of Columbia. Distribution in Washington will be handled by Alpha Beer Distributing located in Kent, WA.
Georgia Politicians threaten to do the Right Thing! (Atlanta, GA) – In what many consider a shocking departure from form, Georgia legislators are poised to introduce a bill that might actually help the state’s populace as well as its craft breweries. One of our favorite online publications, Creative Loafing, is reporting that HB 314 would give every Georgia brewpub and brewery “the right to sell, for personal use and not for resale, a maximum of 288 ounces (which translates to one case) of malt beverages manufactured on its premises for off-premise consumption.”
Indiana-based Brewery Expands to Indiana! (Indianapolis, IN) – Until now, if you wanted to enjoy a Sun King Brewing beer, you had to be in central Indiana, but all of that is about to change. After a series of expansion efforts to increase capacity and after vetting a number of distribution options, Sun King will now be available in southeastern Indiana and across the northern third of the state. “Indianapolis and the surrounding areas have always been our main focus and have been relatively easy to service,” said Omar Robinson, Sun King’s President. “In order to share our beers with the rest of the state, we need logistical support, so when approaching new territories we felt it would be best to work with distribution partners that live and work in those areas. We are excited to be working with Indiana Beverage and North Vernon Beverage to give more Hoosiers access to our beer.”
Wynkoop Picks its 2013 Beerdrinker of the Year (Denver, Co) – Warren Monteiro, a New York City beer columnist and beer traveler, has won Wynkoop Brewing Company’s 17th annual search for America’s greatest beer lover. Monteiro’s in-depth beer expertise, extensive travels in pursuit of beer, and his efforts to promote great beer to others helped him win the 2013 title. “This year was very difficult to judge,” said Cody Christman, the 2009 Beerdrinker of the Year and a judge at Saturday’s finals. “All three finalists were superb and deserved to be on the national beer stage. But Warren won the competition with his blend of wit, knowledge, and a deep passion for all things related to beer.”
