Nigerian Beer Grows in US
Star Beer, a popular Nigerian lager, is now available in Texas at select H-E-B and Total Wine stores. But this his expansion is part of a broader American market strategy by African Beers USA, and the visionary woman behind it.
The beer is a lager brewed with a blend of water, malted barley, hops, malted sorghum, and sucrose. It has been brewed in Nigeria since 1949 and was first introduced to the U.S. market in 2016 in California.
Nigeria’s Star Beer is currently available in a dozen U.S. states, including California, Florida, Maryland, North Carolina, Nevada, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington, as well as Las Vegas, NV and the District of Columbia. And its recent debut in Texas is strategic. Texas has a large Nigerian community, particularly in cities like Houston, which has one of the largest Nigerian populations outside of Nigeria.
The US distribution is spearheaded by African Beers USA, founded by entrepreneur May Chioma Odiakosa, who aimed to bring the “heritage beverage” to American consumers.
Odiakosa and her son, Jordan, currently oversee the brand in the US., and have ambitious goals not only to grow Star Beer but to increase access to and appreciation of other African imports like Tusker in the US.
“The biggest thing about all this is highlighting African excellence,” Jordan Odiakosa explains. “It’s about allowing people to try products from Africa that they wouldn’t have ever heard of or considered.”

Samuel Adams Beer Gets More Expensive
If you’ve noticed that picking up a six-pack of Samuel Adams hits your wallet a little harder these days, you’re not imagining things. A recent report from FinanceBuzz found that Samuel Adams prices have jumped a whopping 71% from 2015 to 2025—way above the 41% average increase for beer overall, and certainly faster than general inflation.
So, what’s behind the steep climb? No need to play detective. The Consumer Price Index shows that “beer at home” has been getting more expensive every year since 2020, thanks to rising costs for ingredients, cans, bottles, and shipping. Boston Beer Company, the folks behind Samuel Adams, have confirmed that trend in their public earnings reports.
Part of the price hike comes down to Samuel Adams’ European-inspired brewing style. The beer relies on German noble hops, which are rarer—and pricier—than most other hop varieties. When you add in higher packaging costs, state taxes, and regional pricing differences, it’s not hard to see why that beloved six-pack costs a lot more than it did five—or ten—years ago.
