With 2023 soon to be a memory, we look back on the year’s best beer commercial, as well as a tragic death at a bar in Winston-Salem, the result of a contaminated beer line.

Best Beer Ad of 2023

It’s no secret that we’re big Guinness Stout fans.

In 2017 American Craft Beer was invited to Ireland to cover its emerging craft beer scene. And while we were blown away by what by craft breweries like the White Hag in Sligo were doing, we ended many an evening drinking Guinness at the local pub.

Guinness does what it does and they do it well… Like this singing pint ad for Guinness 0, set to the instantly recognizable voice of 80s power ballad queen Bonnie Tyler and one of her biggest hits “Holding Out for a Hero.”

‘Holding out for a zero’ shows a tableful of warbling pints singing in tandem in the middle of a typical Irish pub in what is the brand’s biggest responsible drinking campaign to date,” according to The Drum. The spot was created by long-time agency partner AMV BBDO to mark the start of the festivities for Ireland’s most famous weekend.”

And in 2023 Guinness’ hilarious “Holding Out for a Zero” spot finally made its way across the pond for US beer fans to enjoy.

Words to Drink By

”Yes, things are more challenging, but independent brewers still sell more than one out of eight beers in the United States.” – Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association.

Contaminated Beer Line Leads To Bar Death

“All three of these people drank the exact same beer and immediately begin vomiting. They said it was burning their throats and burning their mouths,” the caller told 911. “We believe that the beer line cleaners left a poisonous cleaner in one of the lines.”

According to WRAL, “the cleaning company, Caffey Distributing, said they are investigating how the cleaner was left behind.
