Quick Hits – Huge Ass Beers Sparks Federal Lawsuit, Beer Name Stirs Up Hindu Outrage

The beer biz never sleeps at American Craft Beer. And here’s some more of what’s been happening in the beer world while you were drinking your way to March.

beer, Quick Hits – Huge Ass Beers Sparks Federal Lawsuit, Beer Name Stirs Up Hindu OutrageHuge Ass Beers vs Giant Ass Beer (New Orleans, LA) –  “Huge Ass Beers is the trademarked name for a plus-sized pour of draft beer sold at a trio of related Bourbon Street businesses” according to the New Orleans Advocate. “With the term printed on their plastic cups and containers, on employees’ T-shirts, doormats and huge signs brandished by street barkers, Bourbon Street is plastered with Huge Ass Beers marketing.”

But Huge Ass Beers apparently has an unwelcome competitor, Giant Ass Beer who sell extra-large draft beers at its three Bourbon Street Bars as well as at its strip club (of course it does).

And just in time for Mardi Gras the company that owns the Huge Ass Beers’ trademark has now filed a lawsuit in federal court alleging trademark infringement and seeking a restraining order that bars the sale of Giant Ass Beer, as well as damages.

According to Jan McNulty who broke this Big Ass story for The Journal, “Huge Ass beer is served in a 32-oz. plastic tub, identical to food-service quart containers.” But there’s also a family Huge Ass Beer cups including the popular Butt Cup “a 45-oz. container shaped like a female midsection, and the Huge Ass Bottle, a 70-oz. plastic tower roughly the size of a fire extinguisher.”

There’s also the Half Ass Beer” in the petite 16oz cup if you’re looking to do something half-ass.

Olde Salem Brewing explained  that it was just making a musical analogy… In a reference on its website that has now been removed “Hanuman” was described as a Spanish Milk Stout brewed to evoke “flamenco on the radio,” a homage to a decade-old song bearing the same name by Rodrigo y Gabriela…

In 2014 Odd 13 Brewing also made the mistake of naming an IPA after the Hindu God Hanuman. And only hours after Hindu statesman Rajan Zed spearheaded a protest, the drink’s name (which originally came from a Facebook contest) was withdrawn.
