New Beer Alert – Bold Barrel-Aged Winter Blends And More

The Winter holidays are now over, yet winter remains. And American craft brewers are keeping things as warm as they can, with a big roster of big beers as well as more approachable offerings that suit the season.

Bigfoot Sighting! (Chico, CA / Mills River, NC) – On February 10, Sierra Nevada Brewing announce that something very big, and very rare was making a “very” limited release appearance eat the brewery’s gift shops and online store.

The newest from the brewery’s “Trip in the Woods” series, Sierra Nevada Narfoot is a massive 12.8% ABV blend of two big, iconic brews from Sierra Nevada – Bourbon Barrel-Aged Narwhal Imperial Stout and Bourbon Barrel-Aged Bigfoot Barleywine-style Ale.

“This beer is an example of taking the long path, and the pay-off that comes with it,” said Brian Grossman, Chief Brewer and second-generation brewery owner at Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. “It’s the sum of hundreds of small but important details that have all been thoughtfully shepherded along in a process that has taken years. The details truly matter, and you can taste it.”

The barrel-aging of the two base beers began some five years ago, resting in select bourbon barrels at the brewery’s Chico, CA barrel room. In that time the beers slowly matured and transformed.

When the aging process for each beer reached its peak, the experts of the Sierra Nevada barrel-aging program then meticulously blended batches to achieve the ideal flavor profile. At roughly 60% Bourbon Barrel-Aged Narwhal and 40% Bourbon Barrel-Aged Bigfoot, the resulting Narfoot  is available to the public in premium cork and cage 500mL bottles, but it won’t be for long.

Catching A Coldie (Bend, Oregon) – !0 Barrel Brewing has a new addition to its Hopburst family of Northwest IPAs,  that hits that sweet for those looking for full-bodied flavor without the alcohol overload that sometimes comes with a West Coast-Style India Pale Ale. Light orange color and bursting with citrus, tropical mango and stone fruit notes, 10 Barrel Scout Camp Coldie is an impressively full-flavored 5% ABV India Pale Ale that’s uber-approachable, yet drinks like the big boys.

Since it launched earlier this year 10 Barrel’s newest year-round has been a BIG success, filling a void for those who appreciate full body and a light buzz, but prefer less commitment than your typical 7 to 9% ABV IPAs.

Have Your “Best Day” (California) – Non-Alcoholic beers have come a long way since your uncle used to order an O’Doul’s. And there’s a Northern California brewery, Best Day Brewing, which makes a great Kölsch that just happens to be non-alcoholic.

Brewed using a smart combination of Cologne and Pilsner malts and Hallertau Traditional hops, Best Day Kölsch is a crisp and perfectly balanced refresher that comes with a nice toasty malt character but won’t leave you buzzed.
