Modelo Especial’s business is on a roll in the wake of Bud Light’s association with a transgender influencer.

Here’s the deal…

These are polarizing times and Bud Light is continuing to feel a backlash following its, brief but ultimately costly, partnership with Dylan Mulvaney, a transgender influencer whose image was put on a Bud Light beer can to celebrate “365 Days of Girlhood.”

The initial Dylan Mulvaney announcement took place on April 1 (ironically April Fool’s Day) and in spite of Anheuser-Busch’s desperate efforts to put the matter to bed the brand has been experiencing serious sales declines ever since then.

By the end of May Bud Light was dethroned as the nation’s #1 beer by Modelo Especial, a Mexican beer brand that’s part of the Anheuser-Busch family everywhere in the world except in the US, where it brewed south of the border by Constellation Brands who sell it in the US.

And that momentum shows absolutely no signs of slowing anytime soon…

Modelo which generated $3.9 billion in sales in 2021, making it the biggest imported brand in the US, according to Statista — “achieved double digit growth” in the latest quarter, Bill Newlands, chief executive of Constellation Brands, told analysts and investors on an October 5 quarterly call.

The Victor, NY-based company, which also brews Corona in Mexico and distributes it across the US said on the call that its beer sales grew by 12% in its most recent quarter ended Aug. 31 compared to a year ago.

According to the New York Post “Retailers are increasingly giving up shelf space that Anheuser-Busch once commanded with its top brands, including Bud Light and Budweiser…

“Bud Light has lost about 20% of its customers since Mulvaney posted images and videos on April 1 with a Bud Light can. The former ‘King of Beers’ now accounts for 8.1% of beer retail beer sales year to date compared with Modelo’s 8.5%.”

“Bud Light still just stubbornly down around 30% in volume compared to last year, which is where it’s been since May or June,” Beer Business Daily publisher Harry Schuhmacher  told Fox News Digital Friday. “That tells me that this is quasi-permanent, meaning those consumers are just lost forever.”

We’ve never seen anything like this in the beer industry,” Schuhmacher added.
