It’s been a roller-coaster ride for Carson King, the viral sensation who raised more than $1 million in ‘beer money’ that he pledged to donate to a children’s hospital…
First he was a hero having turned his beer money joke of begging for beer money, which eventually raised over a $1 million to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
Then he fell from grace after a reporter at the Des Moines Register turned up a racist tweet sent when he was 16, and as part of that backlash enthusiastic early supporters like Anheuser-Busch publically cut ties with the young man.
But in the story continues and in true “Iowa Nice” tradition there’s a little redemption for King, who was quick to apologize for his youthful mistakes. And maybe even for the Des Moines Register, which felt its own backlash and has fired the reporter who delved into King’s past.
Ignoring the controversy, Governor Kim Reynolds has signed a proclamation declaring Saturday, September 28, 2019, as Carson King Day in the state of Iowa.
This from the Governor’s Proclamation…
WHEREAS, Carson King can showcase who we are as a people, not only by selflessly donating to a worthy cause, but spreading the message of generosity. Because of his efforts, over $1 million and counting has gone towards the renowned University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City; and
WHEREAS, Carson King continues to be a force for change, stating he’s working to raise $2 million for the hospital before September 30th; and
WHEREAS, the Carson King Story embodies a young man’s ability to help a cause greater than himself and can serve as a model for others to follow; and
WHEREAS, Carson King has shown that one person can make a difference and one person can make positive change even through the unlikeliest of ways:
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Kim Reynolds, Governor of the State of Iowa, do hereby proclaim September 28th, 2019 as Carson King Day in the State of Iowa and thank him for his contributions to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, Iowa children, and their families.
And not only is King getting his own day…he’s getting a beer that supports his efforts.
Genesee Brewing took to Facebook to announce that they had accepted King’s apology and would be supporting his efforts to raise money for Stead Family Children’s Hospital by brewing “Iowa Legend” and donating a dollar from every pint and 16oz can sold in the state to his endeavor.
